The bcg from one of my rifles failed the test where the rings are supposed to support the weight of the carrier. Gun only has 857rds through it and the bcg is an AO Precision. That seems pretty premature to me, just wondering if the carrier is the problem or if it was just a set of bad rings? Gun was cycling fine but I've always read that DD barrels are over gassed to start with so maybe that's why. I looked inside the carrier but can't really see clearly where the rings sit. The front portion where the raised ring on the front of the bolt rides looks a little rough and maybe that's why the portion of the bolt is already wearing shiny.

Should I just throw this carrier away and grab one of my many spares or just keep running out and replace the rings every 8-900rds.

ETA. So it appears I did the test wrong. I though the rings were supposed to support the weight of the carrier. Turns out all the rings have to do is keep the bolt from falling out of the carrier. They do that but don't have near the tension a new set has.

It could be a rough bore the gas rings seal on, cheap rings, or both.

Rings are not expensive, if it bothers you, buy some fresh ones and re-do the test (correctly) whenever you clean it.

Are some rings stamped and some cut?

What are some good cut, not stamped ones?

I would just replace the gas rings and then just keep a close eye on it.

Typically they are stamp cut. So one side will have a sharper edge. That sharp edge should face the back of the bolt.

You can get a set that aren't stamp cut, which don't have a sharp edge. Eta. Just seen they are OOS. You could go with a 1 piece gas ring.

I'd probably just grab a replacement set from BCM.

I didn't know there was a difference. What happens if you have the sharp edge forward? I just threw some new ones on so who knows what direction they are facing.

Other than sealing better, I wasn't quite sure myself. I found this in an archived thread, it seems to reflect what I've heard in the past.

Putting the rings sharp side rearward will help with sealing, and even allow the ring to cut carbon better on the closing stroke.
If you install them with sharp against sharp edges, could cause some problems with the rings not alone to self adjust each other, and could have been the reason that the rings wore out so quickly. Of if installed round side to the back of the bolt, can get a bit more blow by as well, causing the rings to burn up faster as well.
