This is a place not far from me and often have police trade ins and likely evidence gun parts. I search them to see what they have every once in a while and saw a Colt Guard and was kind of excited until I looked at the pics.

That Colt Guard finish just doesn't hold up well at all, I've seen quite a few that were so bad that people spray painted them black or grey.

It’s funny though because I have 2 1911 commanders, one in 9mm and one 45, in the same finish and they have held up pretty well. I guess maybe it works better on steel than aluminum?
I still hate the finish in that it always looks dirty but has done a fine job in protecting the pistols themselves. |

Electroless nickel with some care will last a long time. Abuse it and it’s a different story.

Back when A1 kits were reasonable, I made a Colt Guard replica finish with with some stainless steel appliance spray paint - it looked as good or better than Colt Nickel finish in my opinion. I ended up stripping it and going with a Colt gray finish some years later, but it looks reasonable if others want to replicate the look (without the peeling).
