Was this ever a valid configuration?

For sure on the transitional A2 rifles, and some of the early 723 /733 iirc for the military, and the short lived Rock Island A2’s if you are looking for government purchases. On the civilian side I can’t recall exactly but I’m sure there were factory builds that had them. What are you thinking of making?

I didn't have anything particular in mind. Mainly I just don't want to be PNG'd if I put one on my A2.

But it may lead down a rabbit hole to another build.

I’ve flipped between the tear drop and standard round many times!! Just build and you’ll feel it when it’s right…. Until you get another idea ;)

they even put tear drops on flat tops...

Though, it seems the IDF will use a tear drop on anything.  I'm sure you can find an A2 in use with tear drops the IDF thread.

I've inspected several 14.5/10.3" URGs with tear drops.  I would imagine that armorers would use them if needed during the 80/90s as they were still widely in the supply chain.

At least initially, the Round, and then the Flat Side Round Forward Assist Plunger would have only been part of the M16A2 rifle specification.

A2 Target sight upper with a Teardrop Forward Assist is one of the few combinations I have never seen on a Factory Colt gun.
