Thinking about a heavy barrel 5.56 upper and was looking at the RRA 20" with a raised rail on the receiver. It has a plain stainless barrel without any muzzle threading. Much reason to go to 24" length?  Better options than RRA for this type of upper? Good situation for a Wylde chamber?  Going to run it on my DD M4V7 lower. Thanks

I have a Bushmaster Varminter with a 24" fluted barrel and it is wicked accurate. It's not what I would consider heavy either. I've read where people have said 24" is unnecessarily long, but I'm not sure if that's true or not. I just wish that barrel were threaded.

If you were to get a 24" bull barrel/heavy barrel it's going to be a boat anchor. I have a 16" RRA with a heavy barrel and one day I'm going to replace the barrel just because of the excessive weight. It's also extremely accurate, but the weight sucks.

If you want a bench shoother and if weight is not a concern then I don't see how you can go wrong. You just won't enjoy carrying it anywhere.

It's going to be a bench gun anyway I take it, with a heavy barrel, so may as well get the most out of it.

For long range shooting (300 yards plus) or accurate bench guns in any caliber from .223 to .458, I like a 24 inch to get every fps I can and a heavy barrel.  That combination has been working for me for quite a few decades so I see no reason to change it up now.  Just so long as I only have to carry them from the car to the bench.

Its $100 more for a 24" over a 20"

I decided since the RRA varmint barrel doesn't say its 416R, it must be 416 Stainless steel. I decided to look for a good heavy 223 Wylde 416R barrel and build an upper.

My 20" RRA varmint does bughole 10 shot groups at 100.

The RRA Varmints are very heavy.  I had the 24" varmint and the Predator Pursuit 20".  Both extremely good shooters.  Parted with the Varmint and kept the Pursuit.
Find a Pursuit upper.  National Match barrel.  Same accuracy as the Varmint.  Still heavy but not RRA Varmint heavy.  Did I mention the RRA Varmints are heavy?

Bull barrels suck to live with. Consider White Oak Armaments 20" SPR barrel or their 20" Designated Marksman barrel (fluted). You only gain 100 fps going from 20" to 24". You'll end up with an upper that can actually be used for something other than bench shooting only and it will still be a tack driver.

They sell assembled uppers or you can build it yourself.

I just put together a 20 inch Bull barrel for a PD hunt
I'm going on in June , yeah it's a heavy weighing in at
16 lbs the way i got it configured. it's a bench or tripod
gun , my main rounds i put together for the hunt is a 55 SPBT
25.0 H335 at 2250 aol . it pushing them @ 3057 fps for a 10
shot average , my Tikka SV in 223 with a 23.9 barrel  is pushing
the same round @ 3158 for a 10 shot average . my bull is a 1-9
and is a Douglas barrel . give you a idea on fps on the barrels.

So 20+ years ago, I bought a JE complete upper with a 24" heavy barrel, DPMS high mount upper, Wilson barrel and "matched" bolt. It is still an absolute laser beam on prairie dogs out to 250 or 275 yards or so.
The only difference between 22 and 24" barrel was an extra 175fps bullet speed. I like a fast bullet so I'd get the 24".

Some years ago back when Model 1 Sales was around, I bought this 24" SS Bull Barrel, pretty sure it's a Wilson. For $200 IIRC or thereabouts, it shoots great... always has. It loves the 52gr SMK.

10-shots from the bench...
