I got this barrel for $50 here because it’s a 223 barrel that’s 5/8x24 and I had never heard of that. 416R BA barrel 10.5 stainless and I actually kind of like it. My curiosity is now there and want to clean it up and get it on a build. What can I use to remove what looks like rust?  The rifling looks fine but the threads are gross and there is just carbon all over it.

Use a wire brush. The rust looks like from a can and I see rocksett maybe. I you want to cover shipping, I am happy to media blast to look new for you.

I do believe it was run with a suppressor. I will more than likely run it with a suppressor too. The main reason I got it was just pure curiosity because I had never seen a non 30 caliber or bigger barrel threaded at 5/8x24!  It’s pretty cool and now I want to use it hahaha!  I’ll see about shipping it that’s a kind offer I’ll PM you. Other than a wire brush is there any special oils or solvent to use on stainless?

I have not run into any issues with them and cerakote them often. When media blasted they look like Noveske Afgan bbls. You got a cool one. I have not seen one like that either.

StainLESS, not stainPROOF.  Contrary to popular belief, stainless steel CAN rust. It just takes longer than carbon steel.

Put it in a plastic tub submerged in parts cleaning solvent for a couple days.  Brush it out best you can,  finish up with non chlorinated brake clean.

Edit,  for the surface rust try some fine steel wool.

I'd try some of this cleaner:

https://www.ar15.com/forums/Armory/Review-Breakthrough-Suppressor-Cleaner-OP-updated-/20-548434/

Follow up with oil of choice and some 0000 steel wool.

A media blast followed up with Cerakote would be cool if it ends up being a shooter.

Elbow grease.

If you use steel wool, make sure you use stainless steel wool.  Regular steel wool can micro embed into the stainless steel and set up rusting.

Ordered some of the cleaner. I’ll soak it then oil it. Then shoot it and see. If it is a shooter I’ll media blast then cerakote!

The 5/8x24 on a 223 barrel is wild to me but apparently will help with accuracy. Don’t know if that’s bs or not.

Update:

Barrel sent off to a very generous member to get media blasted. Once it’s back I’ll put it in a temp upper with a random cheap handguard and check it for grouping and stuff.

@Whiskeyballzzz Indeed he is!  Does great work and here it is!

As you all can see this barrel looks a hundred times better!

The barrel as a whole looks awesome!

I wasn't expecting it but he did an amazing job cleaning up and around the gas journal and port for me as well!

The majority of the rocksett type stuff has been almost completely blasted away!  all thats left is probably soaking it in some sort of solution and a wire brush to get in there

Not a single trace of carbon on the crown!

The next thing I'm gonna do is clean the threads up a little and oil the inside of the barrel and outside.  Then throw it on a makeshift upper and shoot it.  If it groups well enough it will go in a suppressed bedside build after cerakote!

On a 10.5” barrel do you guys have any recommendations on acceptable grouping and what I should test for?  The most I’ve ever done is just basic zeroing on a 14.5” and 16” gun. Never actually went into detail past ‘looks good for me’.  Should I do a 25m zero or stretch it out?  I’m going to first as I said put a cheap red dot on it and just make sure barrel cycles and runs well before doing accuracy. If it passes the runs well test it will house an MRO.
