Been wanting to get a target and backstop set up in my backyard and this is what I came up with after doing some reading and research. I used treated 2x8s with lag screws and some deck screws. I picked up a stall mat at Rural King on sale for $28. I shoot a 45# Bear Grizzly recurve and at 10 feet the arrows bounce right off the stall mat.

Stall mat as in for horse? Could you tell me more about the mat? Rubber? Thickness? |

My uncle uses his old hot tub cover for a backstop on his long distance 3d target (50-60+ yd shot depending on where you stand) and it works really well. It's actually harder to get the arrow out of the cover if you miss that it is the target.

It is a horse stall mat. I found it on sale at Rural King for $28. It is solid rubber and very heavy. I shoot a 45# recurve and from 5 feet the arrows just bounce off. My brother's compound bow (set at 60-65#) the arrows only punctured about 4 inches from ten feet. The thickness of the mat is right around 3/4". Its very effective and I couldn't be happier with it.

Good Cheap Idea! This is going to hopefully be my weekend project this week or next. Doubt my neighbors want to have the side of their house as my stray arrow catcher....

I tried using a large piece of carpet hung over a woven wire farm fence once. All it did was break my arrows.

another simple target that works well with vertical bows or crossbows is a rag bag. simply take a large poly or burlap bag and stuff it as tightly as possible with old clothes, towels, burlap or for that matter you can use the plastic grocery/wal-mart bags ( takes a lot of them..1000 plus) then simply tie off the top and then hang or prop against something. The arrows from My Tenpoint Titan (175lb limbs and 300+ FPS) only go in about 6-10 inches and pull out with my thumb and index finger only!!!!.
I found the instructions on Crossbow nation, but I'm sure the other archery sites probably have something similar as well. Jason |

I built this backstop a few weekends ago, and it worked extremely well for my 48# recurve and my youngest sons bow, but my oldest son got to try out the new PSE brute X, and at 10yrds, the carbon arrows go in about 6 inches. That's good I guess, but what a bitch to get them out. I could smell the rubber melting when I walked up to pull them out.
I had to pull with both hands, using my forehead to push against the mat. . I'm really hoping that at the farther ranges, the arrows don't go in that far. At least once I got the bow sighted in, my son never put one in the mat.

Horse tall mat are also available at Tractor Supply. They are made of recycled tires. Heavy and flexible.

I've had a few over the years...
Favorite one was an old street hockey net that wore apart. Got rid of the net but kept the steel pipe framing and hung targets from the top crossbar. The frame only hung the target and the backstop was a few layers of old fencing laying around. It was just woods behind that so we weren't concerned about neighbors. We recently bought a house and now I need to make something new. I like the idea of the horse mat. |
