Heck, if you had asked about 2 months earlier you could have headed down to the DC area and I'd have shown you how I do it. Teach a man to fish, if you catch my drift... I keep trying to take step-by-step pics, but always get distracted. Here's a brief of what I do though: 1) Wipe the rifle down, mostly excess oil around FCG pins or charging handle. I don't get OCD about it, as frankly I want the worn look so I'm fine if paint rubs off. 2) Mask off only the essentials. I don't put anything behind the ejection port cover, remove the bolt, etc. I cover the areas of the muzzle for my supressor mount, front sight post, rear sight aperture, windage markings, etc. For scopes, if I have Butler or other caps, I stuff kleenex or TP under the caps and close them, otherwise I tape over the lens with kleenex/tp under it. I again only mask off the essential scope markings, like the index marks for the turrets, the numbers, and the direction arrow for impact adjustment. 3) If it's your first time and you are apprehensive, take one of your base coat colors and just quickly spray across the rifle. Just get it out of your system, no there's no going back 4) For the base coat, I like to mix Aervoe Sand and Earth yellow in blotches or bands. Make sure it's a light enough coat that you aren't puddling paint all over and that it's not going to run, but not so light that you can still see all the company painted logos and junk. I personally only do 1 base coat. 5) Once the base coat has sat for like 30+ minutes or so, I grab my old boot camp mesh laundry bag, which I consider the key ingredient. The pattern of the mesh is just right IMO. You want the paint to still be tacky, but not so wet that paint will come off. The tackiness helps hold the mesh in place. I drape it over the rifle and try to stick/form it along the rifle best as possible, but it's not critical. ***Don't forget to move your selector to FIRE or SAFE, ie the opposite of the base coat position. Otherwise you get a nice black dong on your lower 6) With bag in place, do light, short passes with Aervoe Earth Brown and Field Drab. Remember, the longer you hold the spray, the heavier and more defined the top color will be. You want to kind of blend heavier passes with lighter passes, so some areas have a light ghosting of that mesh pattern, and others might be more solid brown/drab. Pull the mesh off, move to opposite side, repeat. I paint the rifle with everything attached. When I do extra rail covers, I line them all up next to each other and basically do the same as above. One key thing here, don't be like me and go overboard on your top/mesh passes. I tend to cover the whole rifle when I meant to just give some light blotches/bands! Once you are all done, again let her sit for an hour or so, then you should gingerly be able to move it somewhere warm and dry. It's going to smell like pant for at least a few days, and slowly the tackiness will wear off. Eventually she'll be ready to handle, snap pics, fondle, and maybe some spooning. Additionally, color selection is KEY. If you want this stuff to actually work instead of just look good, you need to really walk around and soak up the colors around you. I personally find greens to be tough to match, so I don't rely on it as much. Browns, tans, and some of the olive drab type colors should be great wherever you are. |

I do love to fish Excellent write up! I had to laugh at step 3 I have the complete lower left from my first AR purchase ever and have plans of doing a similar style paint job to it when I can find another upper for it. (sold the original upper during the "ban scare" ) |

Shot it for the first time this past Wednesday. Runs like a champ on all ammo. Oh yeah it's rifle length gas system. |

I have a black one coming together this month and this is the goal, maybe with a flat gray primer as the main color. Do you by chance have step by step pics, or a how to write up, or happen to be in my town soon? Most pics are gone, but the write up will help you. ETA: Since I used krylon khaki it sometimes looks khaki when in the desert type dirt then turns back to grey on the concrete. It adapts somehow. http://www.ar15.com/archive/topic.html?b=6&f=19&t=404960 Awesome, ive managed to find sevefal other pics of it on various threads, are they all hosted somewhere by chance? Good luck with your came, and if you use krylon khaki go very light to the point that you can still see a lil black and the grey will really pop. |

View Quote What color/paint did you use? Looks like a good match for KAC taupe or the ACR coyote which I prefer over FDE. Nice work. |

I hear it's a pretty good match to KAC taupe too, but I don't have any to compare the Aervoe to. It is a little darker than "normal" FDE, which I also prefer. |
