I was lucky enough to have someone in the USA reach out to loan me a VHS-2 magwell and magazine to take a look at it and see if there are any mags available that would work in it.
A number of sources have claimed that the VHS-2 magazine is a G36 magazine, and the answer is "yes" and "no" A VHS-2 magazine is definitely based off a G36 magazine, BUT, it tapers towards the front when looking down on top (picture showing the VHS-2 magwell, VHS-2 mag in the middle, and G36 magazine at the bottom.) This taper means that G36 magazines will NOT fit in a VHS-2 magwell. Also, the locking studs to connect two magazines together are in different locations, so you cannot even connect the two mags together (not that you would really want to, but an interesting side note...) Also, the second image shows a G36 magazine inserted into a Hellion with no magwell- you will note it is holding in there purely by friction. The VHS-2 magazines are ever so slightly narrower than the G36 magazines, and although a G36 magazine can be forced into the receiver opening and it appears the rifle might feed, it is not going to be reliable to get it to seat properly. Ironically, it appears that VHS-2 magazines might fit in G36 magwells, but I don't have a complete G36 in house to confrim, just a stripped G36 magwell. I did even try an AUG magazine out of curiousity, and it does slide into the VHS-2 magwell, but the mag catch features prevent it from inserting high enough to work. If I were to hazard a guess, VHS, probably redesigned the magazines to ensure they would be supplying the magazines for the rifle contract, and that G36 mags could not just be re-used (both from a corporate and reliability standpoint this makes sense if you are the rifle manufacturer)/ Sven Manticore Arms

Interesting. Have you thought of making a one off mag well to see if G36 mags would work? Strictly for science, of course as G36 mags aren't nationally popular here.
Would an AUG mag well be doable? That would likely generate sales amongst the bullpup crowd. |

That’s some cool yet disappointing analysis. It does make sense they’d want to remain sole-source, though it sounds like anyone in the G36 space could throw together a knock-off magazine if they really wanted. Magpul is too cool now; maybe AC-Unity since they like competing where everyone else has ignored demand but a Bosnian company making accessories for a Croatian gun might be a bit of a pipe dream given their mutual history.
I’ll still take one of every kind of magazine well if you decide to make any.

As I said, the fit of the G36 magazine is so snug in the opening in the underside of the receiver where the magazine enters, it is not a good option. To be honest, we are so busy I just don't have the time right now to mess around with it, nor with an AUG magwell. I wish I did, but other things are on the plate that are more pressing- I just wanted to share my findings for those who have been wondering! Sven Manticore Arms |

Magazines family tree branches are fun to analyze. A very similar observation has been made in the AK world between Plastic R4 mags and the older generation Plastic Zastava 556 mags that were marketed with the M21 and some made it in with M85PV Pistols. Different mags, with even different capacities but almost certainly of the same make. Myanmar is using its own Plastic mags too.
