I think I want to buy an American Ranch to have cut down and threaded just past the fore end. I plan to mount a TA-47 2x ACOG on it and use it with my Rugged Radiant to make a compact, handy brush rifle.

Now I just need to decide on a caliber. It’s going to be .308, 5.56 or 7.62x39 because I have a large stockpile of each. I already have a higher end bolt action .308 so I’m leanings towards the the two intermediate cartridges.

The 5.56 has the advantage of wider load selection and the option to use AR mags. I’m kind of intrigued by the 7.62 because it would be something a little different. A Chinese AK is the only rifle I currently own in 7.62x39 and it rarely makes it out if the safe.

Very cool. How does it sound?

I just shoot garbage steel case through it so it cracks obviously but it’s much quieter than my suppressed ARs. It shoots trash ammunition far better than I expected and overall one of my very favorite rifles to shoot.

300bo. You can run subs for range fun and supers will do great with that barrel length. Not going to be mag dumping so the ammo cost should be less of a concern.

Someone on here posted the sickest 300 BO American SBR a while back and I could never find the picture again. Had a suppressor QD mount and the front part of the stock was cut at an angle to let the can fit on.

SBR bolt guns are just kind of neat, not a dime a dozen like AR's.

I think the lack of selection for the x39 is a feature. Pretty much every round you can get your hands on shoots the same and hits in the same place. There are exceptions of course if you look for them,  but 99% of what’s available is 123 grain at 2200 fps. Elegantly simple.

Where’d you have the barrel chopped?

Took my 300blk hunting for first time this year and loved it, sadly no chance to shoot yet.

Would love to SBR it, maybe next year

I’m starting to rethink this project a bit.

I don’t have a .223/5.56 bolt gun and that obviously makes the most sense considering I have hundreds of compatible mags and tens of thousands of round of ammo. I already have 7.5, 10.3 and 11.5” AR SBRs so I’ve about decided to keep this one 16” and go with a 2-7x or 3-9x scope since I don’t have a scoped 5.56 AR outside of 3x magnifiers.

The .223/5.56 makes a lot more sense for a 16” scoped gun since the cartridge has much more long range capability than the 7.62x39 or the .300BO. Those don’t really offer anything I can’t do with a suppressed .30-30.

I have an American ranch compact 556 with an swfa ultralight 2.5-10x on it.

It's a 16" threaded barrel with a shorter lop stock. I don't think they sell them anymore with the compact stock. My certain was pre-AR mag compatibility as well, but honestly got this gun i prefer the flush fit mag and i have several spares and have never had an issue.

It's a pretty lightweight package and fun to shoot.
