Had a private group out at our range last weekend doing FOF with gas airsoft ARs and AKs.
Focus was on team tactics in a rural setting.
These guys have trained some of this live fire before, but had not done it against a live OPFOR.
Found they were a lot more "clunky" than they should have been the first couple iterations- comm was almost non existent, people weren't taking the initiative, etc.
By the third iteration with some changes from the OPFOR thrown in, the team was starting to gel a bit- taking more initiative and adapting to the changing situation very quickly. Comms were a little better but not a lot.
Last iteration was kind of a team vs. team situation. One team was given a general area to watch and expect a patrol to come from one of two ways- one route was "easy" but hardly any cover, 2nd option was harder terrain that was extremely noisy to move through.
The second team was told essentially a small group is waiting to ambush you, but you don't know where, here are your options for movement- route A ("easy") or route B (harder and loud). They choose route A. The second team that was getting ambushed was given the chance to get hit twice and still "live", whereas the ambush team was not. The goal was working the tactics, not necessary the "game" or "competition" itself.
The first team started the ambush from a distance, essentially "walking in" the airsoft BBs and the fire was surprisingly accurate at the distance (approx 50m). The second team reacted to contact and moved against the first team and took the initiative- a lot less "clunky" then earlier engagements.
We ended it with a 500 yard stretcher team carry uphills to a "safe location" as an entire team. Great way to end it after doing it all day in the sun :)
Cardio.
