Looking at a set of RMA 1092s.

Need large SAPI plates, medium isn't big enough.

I want to spend 1000-1200 on plates.

What plates are better then RMA 1092?

Hesco 3611C 3+ plates would be an option. It's about 1.5 lbs lighter per plate but you don't have M855A1 protection. Trade off for the lighter weight. Could also do the Hesco 4601 to get up to IV protection at a bit more weight (7.6 lbs/plate) but in your budget.

Also happen to have a new SAPI large 3611C in the EE too https://www.ar15.com/exchange/topicEE.html?t=2437317&f=90&type=1

There's also the Highcom 3S9M, which boasts very huge threats stops like M80A1. They are a bit more at $1300 set.

The only caveat is that these are a little thicker than most plates at 1.2" thick.

First, if you need a large, it's a 1093, not a 1092. The 1093 is SAPI Large, stops M855A1 and weighs 6.4 pounds.

Second, anything that stops more threats will be heavier in your price range. The 3S9M at 6.9 pounds for SAPI Large is a perfect example.

Third, what is "better" to one person may not be to another. "Better" to someone could mean lighter and same threat level. "Better" to another may be higher threats but more weight is OK. For me "better" means more threats stopped at less weight... this will exceed your budget. For example:

Hesco 4800 is level IV and 5.7-5.9 pounds for SAPI L, but $1350 per plate.

The LTC 28590 were the lightest level IV but out of production. SAPI Large was 5.58 pounds. They were over $2300 per plate.

Keep in mind, the old 1093 was just 5.15 pounds, but did not stop M855A1. No level IV is that light.

Apex has some very interesting quality options.
They offer LTC, Highcom and TenCate which are the best names in the business. Look under lightweight plates.

I’m not sure what your actual threat concerns are, but for a lightweight, high quality plate rated against both 7.62 NATO and M855, the TenCate CR3200SA is great all around choice. It’s lighter than the RMA plate and in my mind it’s a better choice (it’s what I’m using). Armor Express offers the same TenCate plate simply rebranded by AE as D2648.

If an ICW plate would work for you, I think these are a very nice option. I hope to pick up a set before long.

These are roughly the equivalent of the old RMA 1093 plates. Stops M80 and M855 but not M855A1. They weigh 5.5 pounds for SAPI Large. Uses tile ceramic face instead of monolithic like the old RMA 1093. So 0.35 pounds heavier and looses the monolithic face vs. original RMA.

I would not consider the  CR3200SA to be an "upgrade" to the current 1093 which has M855A1 protection. There are lighter plates that stop M855 but not M855A1, such as the Hesco 3810 which weigh 4.7 pounds in a SAPI Large. They cost about $150 more per plate, but that buys a 0.8 pound per plate weight savings.
