I have a Ruger Ranch 223 bolt gun that I'm looking to scope out.  What are some good recommendations for it.  Distance is 200 yards and in.

You probably need to come up with a budget to narrow the field.  You aren’t exactly soliciting elite performance parameters at 200 yards and in. For that range, depending on what you are shooting at, a $150 scope might do all you need.

Yeah, depending on how precise you want to be, any old 3-9 would be totally sufficient. No need to reinvent the wheel here.

In for answers as well, I am waiting on mine to arrive.  I have the same rifle in 300 BO and enjoy how light the rifle is, the last thing I want to do is top it with a 1.5 - almost 2lb optic/base combo.  On my 300 BO I currently have a simple red dot and will likely go with a 1.5 - 4 Leupold.  On the 223, I'll likely do the same, or possibly a 3-9x40.  Leupold makes some of hte lightest scopes I have seen (and I've looked a lot), with SFWA making a crazy light 9.5 oz scope, not sure I can get past the looks of it.  I'm waiting for some sales on the Leup's and there are a few right now, buit mostly on the $1,000 territory and I'm looking in the $300-$600 area

I have a Primary Arms 1-6 with the 300BO reticle.  It is just over 1lb.  So far I have been very happy with it on my Ranch 300BO.  It keeps with the balance of the rifle and plenty clear glass with nice and bright illumination.

I have one on a Howa in 6.5 G that I chopped the barrel on.  Makes a nice, lightweight bolt gun that provides all the magnification I need for as far as I’ll ever shoot it.

If you can find a used one, the Nikon 223 scopes with BDC 600 reticle are fantastic scopes for the money and NOT made in China.

If you are looking for inexpensive, the Burris droptine
3-9x40 is hard to beat and is made in the Philippines, not china.

I have several Ranch rifles in different calibers and have a Burris 4-14 mounted on most of them. It has a MOA reticle so is versatile on making use on many calibers or bullet choices. I find the 4-14 power range good for hunting and mid distance target shooting.

Burris Fullfield long range MOA $156 I have bought from this site they are good to go. It fits on the Ranch rifle with low rings.

Thank you @coyotesilencer for that link... I bought one for a project I'm working on.

I found a Bushnell Legend 3-9 with a lighted center dot for $140 at Wally world to put on my American .223 last month.  It clicks all of my boxes for a light weight low end scope.

I put a Vortex PST on mine , I wanted the illumination feature.
Glass is really clear and need to get it on paper and see how it tracks.

An unconventional choice worth a look: the Primary Arms GLx 2x ACSS prism. Simple, lightweight, excellent illuminated reticle, good glass quality, and 2x is practical for 200 yds if you’re not shooting for groups. Only complaints are that the prism sits a tad high for cheekweld purposes (fixable with comb riser or inserts) and the prism is about an inch too far from my eye for the ideal sight picture (not a big deal because it has very generous and usable eye relief). I like it better for this rifle than the 1-4x SWFA LPVO that it previously wore. Hard to beat the light weight and simplicity for this handy rifle IMO.

I ended up going with a Leupold VX-Freedom 3-9x40

That's a terrible suggestion. BDCs suck unless you're shooting the exact load it's set for under the same conditions. Nikon is no longer making or supporting rifle scopes. Even when they did make scopes, their CS was abysmal.

OP, for under 200 yards, a red dot would be fine. If you want some illumination, an LPVO would be perfect.

It's fairly light and decent glass.  For my purpose, wanting a bit of magnification for a 0-200 yard gun, it seems like it will fit the bill just fine.

Nikon is still supporting their scopes and the SpotOn app that calculates the drop on their BDC reticles for pretty much any load imaginable.

I do not think that is quite the case.

Do Nikon Scopes Have a Lifetime Warranty?
July 21, 2020 by Sean D

How does This Affect Current Nikon Scope Owners?
In short, this is the way current owners of Nikon riflescopes can expect Nikon's warranty service to operate.

Nikon riflescopes purchased before November 1, 2019, are eligible for the old "No-Fault" lifetime warranty.
Anyone requesting warranty service on a riflescope purchased before November 1, 2019, must provide proof of purchase from an authorized dealer or reseller to quality.
Any Nikon riflescope purchased after November 1, 2019, will be warrantied under the new rules. These new rules include:
Non-optical systems are warrantied for seven years from the date of purchase
Electronic components carry a one-year warranty.
Under the new warranty program, riflescopes with evidence of misuse, alteration or accident, or damage caused by unauthorized replacement parts will not be covered.
Nikon riflescope warranties are no longer transferrable from one person to another.
The important takeaway here is the need for documentation. If you are like me, the receipt for a ten-year-old Nikon scope is long gone. Nikon will not accept serial numbers or anything other than proof of purchase from an authorized dealer or reseller.

I went with an Arken 4-16. Use it from 100-800 yards.

You did well.  Where general purpose scopes are concerned and weight is a consideration, Leupold is usually hard to beat.

I had 1-4x Burris on mine but wound up swapping it out with a 2-7x Redfield that needed a home

the 2-7x has been perfect for me

1-4X Nikon 223 on mine.   I really don't go for higher power scopes.  I'd play around with a 3x prism if I could find one that mounted low enough.
