I just acquired an early 1970s Winchester 94 in .30-30. It was cheap because it has quite a bit of finish wear and rust. It’s mostly surface rust with some pitting on the last couple inches near the muzzle. The bore is in great shape and it functions perfectly.

I was thinking about having it cut down to 16” and having it threaded to accept a suppressor mount for my Rugged Radiant.

Anyone done something similar with a 94?

Why?

Sure you can load a .30-30 to sub sonic velocities with a 170 gr bullet, and Hornady sells loaded sub sonic ammo with a 175 gr. bullet.  But the end result isn’t any better than a Model 92 in .44 Mag or .45 Colt loaded to sub sonic velocity and it gains very little over a 158 gr .38 special in the shorter, lighter and much smoother Model 92 action with a lot more magazine capacity.

I have no interest at all in subsonic rifle rounds.

Suppressed rifles are much quieter than unsuppressed rifles.

Not a Winnie but here is my Marlin 336. Also have an 1895 setup the same way.

I’ve got a 70’s 94 that I should get threaded. It’s got the bad finish on the receiver so maybe I should get it cerakoted too.

Here’s the rifle I’m thinking of having cut. I’d really like to get a factory 16” .30-30 but the prices are ludicrous.

I would do it. I don't have a Win cut and threaded, but I shoot my Mossberg and Henry with cans on them and love it. All I hear is the sonic crack a good ways out from me. I can keep what little bit of hearing I have. If it wasn't so hard to get cans, I would run them on everything!

Hell yeah man, do it...suppress everything!

I have a pre 64 Winchester 94 that some jackass carved his full name and SSN into the stock.    The receiver was also drilled abd tapped for a side mount scope.    It's value was essentially destroyed by those "enhancements"

It's currently getting the barrel cut down to 16.1" and threaded.    I'm also having it ceracoated while there.

I will run a titanium can and have fun with it.

This has been on my mind since my Sandman cleared back in July.  I'll be bringing up my JM 336 and eventually a 94 to my smith to cut and thread the two of them.

@ropin4gold

Who did the work?  I am thinking about doing this chop and thread to a $300 JM 336 that I stole during the covid games.

Morgan at Class 3 did mine, no cut just thread.
I took care of front site and mag tube end, he doesn't do that stuff.

They did the work. Highly recommend very good communication and an extremely fast turnaround unlike most gunsmiths I have dealt with. Would use again in a second.
