Is it possible to get .400” of threads on a 10/22 and retain the front sight bead?
If I can do that, I think I’d like to try an ECCO salamander

Yes - if the gunsmith has the talent.
The barrel has to be turned back so the front sight can be mounted behind the threads.

Would probably approach the cost of just buying a factory threaded barrel.

I had that done to a stainless 10/22. It was a guy from Rimfire Central who went by Hanging Tree. He stopped advertising work though. I shortened to 16.2” and you can’t even see the joint where the sight base was moved back.

ETA: I thought Adco used to list that as a service but I don’t see it listed.

Maddmacs and Grumpy's Guns also offer that service.  I was going to do mine but went SBR instead.  I did have Grumpy drill and tap a charger barrel for a front sight.  I've used him for a few different things.

JP did one for me, it's absolutely just like his pictures. That's who I would recommend.

Same here. I’ve had JP do two or three and I’ve been pleased with the work.

I was in your position last fall and found it was cheaper to buy a threaded barrel. Ended up with a faxxon barrel and couldn’t be happier.

JP did nice work on my Ruger slabside. I have an Ecco Ocelot Micro on it.

You are costing me money.

Barrel, stamp, new for-end, scope mount, engraving, I'm over $500 because I clicked on a link.  Oh, and I'll have to duracoat the gun now because barrel and receiver don't match.  And we won't  count the suppressor and tax stamp, I had that on the way already.

Hanging Tree did mine many years ago and it looked perfect.  I sold it a couple years ago since the project I had it done for didn't wind up happening, but his work was fantastic and price was very reasonable, IIRC.

That is pretty.
I have an identical slabside in the safe; bought it only because it tested as accurate as my M41s.

Now You've gone and made me have to thread it.  Problems. Problems.
