I won a Weatheryby Element Synthetic awhile back at a raffle and it has just been sitting unused. I have plenty of other shotguns that fit the roles I need them for better than it. So I was thinking about making it into a SBS HD/fun gun. It is inertia driven. I was thinking 12-14 inch barrel. I know there isn’t much out there for aftermarket parts but it’s basically a free gun to play with to me. Has anyone ever SBSed one? Any issues you see with doing it? Who would you guys recommend to cut/thread for chokes/put bead back on? Or is this just a terrible idea all together? Thanks

Advice for work would be Rose Action Sports. I don’t know anything about those guns but it’s not like you have a lot in it. Understand that if you have issues support might be tough.

IMHO ha, we all have one of those!!!
I would acquire another barrel, a barrel to your liking. Vent rib as the Element comes that way. Length unimportant. I'm sure they are available from Weatherby.
They may ask for the serial number of your gun but thats OK. They want to know if you are an owner and you are in possession of one.
My understanding is that inertia guns don't need barrel length to function. Not a gas gun. I have a Girsan MC 312 inertia that is scheduled for the SBS table.
So pick up the extra barrel, go shoot, and start removing what you don't want. You'll need a tax stamp so you'll have to decide on the barrel length to get one.
The ATF measures barrel length down the barrel on a closed bolt, chamber empty. Any acessories on the barrel removed.
Example: If you go short on the Form 1, like 12 inches or whatever, you can start at somewhere under 18 inches and take a hack saw with you and the ammo you most likely will be using most of the time.
Keep cutting off an inch at a time, or in the ballpark of where you wan't to be. Stop when the smile on you face is not going away. That might just be the length you need. You can finish the sawed muzzle later.
Keep in mind where the vent rib is going to be cut so it not hanging out there by itself.
Note: Consider the looks of what you want to do to the gun. Maybe 12" barrel is too short or the barrel ring location won't cooporate with the length you want.
Whatever you put on the Form 1, just make sure you don't go any shorter. The ATF won't throw you in jail as long as your longer.
The ATF will also ask for the overall length. Make sure you end up a bit longer and not shorter than what you put on the Form 1.
Example: 21" inches of receiver and buttstock, add the 12" barrel (example), gives you 33" overall. Put 32 on the form. You stay a bit longer overall.
Hope this info helps. I'm tax stamp poor!
