Right now I am using a Remington 700 in .30-06 with a 22" barrel but I'm wondering if I used something like a .45-70 would I get a better ring? Or do I need to step up to something like .300 Weatherby? Is it the mass of the bullet or the energy that matters? I want to hear my hits better.

I think the volume of ring is more dependent on the type of steel - mild, hardened, etc. or steel hardness. I also know for a fact it also depends how the steel is hung.
I don't think a 7mm vs 300 wm vs 45-70 will make a big difference. They may have a slight tone variation but decibel level imo won't change much. I shoot a few different locations here and they all sound different to me. just my 2 cents. |

You can’t truly call yourself peaceful unless you’re capable of great violence. If you’re not capable of violence, you’re not peaceful, you’re harmless.

Realistically, it should just be a simple question of physics. Choose something with a heavier projectile, a projectile that is traveling faster than your current 30.06 at that range (preferably without stepping down in projectile weight), or both.
That said, are you partially deaf? I sometimes have issues hearing hits at 800-1000 with certain guns/cartridges, but I’ve never once had an issue hearing hits on steel at 300y, even with super short 5.56 guns on a busy range with people shooting obnoxiously braked magnums. |

My range has a few steel targets that are more securely affixed to their mounting posts and a few that have had bushes kind of overgrown around them. Both are not as loud when hit as other steel that is mounted on stands that allow the plate to swing when hit. That said, at 300y, I still don’t think I have an issue hearing hits. |

I have no problem hearing my hits at 300 with a 223. 30.06 ought to be plenty

I can hear hits on my plates with 22LR at 300 yards. You might be using the wrong steel.

Electronic earpro? How is 30-06 not loud at only 300? I hear 5.56 just fine at 400 with cheap peltors and can barely hear it ping at 700.
