Yep! Bear's Bark is getting to be better known around FL ranges than I am. Of course, it's hard to forget Bear once you've seen and heard that Bark! BTW, the above pic is one barrel firing. Pull both triggers at once and you double the fireball -- but hang on! |

thanks keller. You might recognize a couple of those barrels. (The 2nd and 3rd from the right. The 2nd is an SBS, on a Form 2, with the 14" I just bought. Next to it is one of my Express Magnums, wearing the 18" I just got.)

I was thinking of building an SBS like yours but using an Over/Under like Arnold did in the movie Eraser. You mentioned careful handeling, I would seem to me to be much safer if you pulled the "rear" trigger first. That way if your hand does slip in front of the barrel, you can't accidentally fire the second shot. You would have to move your finger to the front trigger to fire the second shot. MadDog |

Tony Rumore built an O/U 12-ga. SBS last year (and IIRC it went in minutes when he posted it for sale). The key is finding a reasonably priced host O/U. Sometimes you can find a real deal on one that has had the stock cut down for a small shooter, or with barrel damage in the section you're gonna cut off anyway. Thanks for the "rear-trigger-first" idea. I'm less worried about both barrels letting go than a shooter losing attention to what he is doing and letting a finger slip in front of the muzzle. The 9-inch barrels are probably too short to shoot two-handed, but there is a lot of muzzle flip, and putting your offhand on top of the barrels/forend keeps it down -- that's the way Nick showed me to shoot it safely. Now that I've owned it for awhile, I mostly shoot it either one-handed, or with a two-hand revolver grip. |

What is the legality involved in building your own AOW? Do you still pay the $200 tax stamp or is it something less? If you still have to pay $200, then why would anyone make an AOW instead of an SBS?

You pay the same $200 "making" tax whether you build an AOW or an SBS. The advantages of an AOW over an SBS: 1. An AOW has some resale value, since if you decide to sell it, the buyer only has to pay a $5 transfer tax. SBS's are difficult to sell unless at a loss -- and out-of-state buyers, who must pay two transfer taxes, won't touch an SBS, while an out-of-state AOW only costs $5+$5 in transfer fees. 2. You may legally transport an AOW interstate without filing a Form 5320.20 and getting it approved by BATF before each trip. SBS's require a 5320.20 prior to interstate travel. 3. In some states, like Michigan, AOWs are allowed but SBS's are prohibited. |

OEF_VET, I see it now -- and that's a great collection!
My SBS is a 20-ga, not a 12, so I'm outa luck. OTOH, when I inherited Bear's Bark I started with light skeet loads, and they were ... well ... too pleasant. Rem Nitro-Steel Magnum loads were way more fun to shoot! I'm not ready for slugs yet, tho. |

The AOW is not a factory AOW. It was built by my company, ETS, Inc., of Franklin, TN, which is an FFL/SOT. The bbl was cut back to 12", the Uncle Mike's pistol grip that was on it was replaced by a Remington whippet-style grip, the foreend was replaced with a Speedfeed foreend, with a loop of AR-15 sling screwed into it. I also replaced the plastic triggerguard with a metal one from a Wingmaster (after the pic was taken). It also wears a Mesa Tactical 4-round shellholder on the left side, and usually has a BlueForceGear Breacher's sling.

From my understanding, and please anyone correct me if I am wrong, a legal individual can convert a shotgun to a SBS after the $200 tax and background check. However, for a shotgun to be an AOW, $5.00 tax, it has to come from the factory in that configuration.
|
|
|
causey,
In order for a shotgun to be made into an AOW, it must have left the original factory as a bare reciever, or with a PG attached. It can not have had a full stock attached. For a private citizen to make an AOW, it is a $200 manufacturing tax. To transfer the AOW between owners, it is a $5 tax. The AOW can never have a stock attached in the future, unless it is forever removed from the NFA registry. A SBS can have had a stock attached at some point. In order to manufacture one, an individual pays $200, which is also the tax for transferring one. Since my AOW was built by a licensed FFL/SOT, it did not cost any additional amount to manufacture. I then transferred the AOW from the company to me, for a $5 tax. |

AOWs are definitely a beautiful thing. There is a long list of states that disallow SBS but have no problems with AOWs, while the only states that ban AOW "shotguns" are Delaware* (smooth bore handgun AOWs only, all other AOWs fine), Hawaii (no NFA there, period), and Massachussets (1998 state-level ban screwed with a lot of things). No, you DIDN'T see CA, IL, & NY in that ban list! Obviously, localities have their own restrictions-- I don't think San Francisco, Los Angeles, Cook County (Chicago + suburbs), and New York City would allow these. Many states also restrict SBS to C&R guns only, but I'm aware of no such C&R restriction for AOWs in ANY state. Personally speaking, I think the AOW class is the coolest when compared to any other NFA class. On the other hand, a SBS does give you a little bit of freedom that an AOW does not. These two points may or may not be important considerations for you: 1. You can have a buttstock (of any type) on a SBS but you may not on an AOW. (Putting a buttstock on this type of AOW makes it an unregistered SBS and therefore contraband.) 2. You can have a rifled slug barrel on a SBS but you may not on an AOW. (Technically speaking, an AOW 'shotgun' is classified as a "smooth bore handgun." Installing a rifled barrel takes away the "smooth bore" part and it's no longer an AOW. If your bore will be greater than 0.5", your frearm is now an unregistered destructive device and therefore contraband.) One last thing. Why build an AOW yourself? Find a friendly Class II and have them build it for you! So long as their fee is $194.00 or less, you'll be ahead at tax stamp time. I've heard of C2's doing quickie conversions-- "Hand me $75 and I'll lop the barrel and AOW it for you." They may just lop the barrel and leave all the cleanup work to you, but you're saving $125.00 and still doing the majority of the build yourself! FWIW, Mike |

Came across this hip holster rig on the Hatcher Gun Co. web site www.hatchergun.com/sbs.htm and thought it might work for Bear's Bark, even though the dimensions were a bit off (the holster was designed for a 9-inch-barrelled 12-ga SxS, and Bear is a 9 7/8-inch-barrelled 20 ga.). Gave 'em a shout on the phone and they said to give it a try; if it didn't fit, send it back for a full refund.
Got it yesterday and Wow! Perfect! Now I just need to figure out which side to wear it on (it's ambi, so the .44Mag goes on one side, the 20-ga. on the other). Comes with a belt that allows it to be worn either low quick-draw gunslinger-style, as in the pic, or straight tactical. Please pardon the painter's pants and the poor photo quality: |

At what length does a shotty become an SBS? I know this is covered somewhere but figured this would be a place to get a quick answer.
|
|
|
When the barrel is under 18", OR the overall length falls below 26".
