I'd imagine many people preparing for SHTF become gunowners if they weren't already and the mindset of people who are gunowners is more towards preparedness.

I prepare for SHTF.

Not...war SHTF...

More along the lines of...

Trains go through my hometown all the time...

A train could wreck..spill some dumb chemical....and we won't be able to use tap water for a week or two...

Or...

Power goes for for a few days....for whatever reason...

You know...
Shit that happens in other towns..but you think could never happen to you...

So I am not that guy going to Wal Mart buying all the bottled water/bread when something stupid happens.

It's even worse, I live on Long Island. Pretty much the only way off the island is through the biggest terrorist target in the world. We couldn't even evacuate if we wanted as the roads would turn into a massive parking lot.

Well that's special. I've been through a handful of hurricanes directly--many more indirectly. That's not really the issue. The issue is thousands upon thousands driving through your city evacuating. Your city's resources being redirected to other parts of the region, and the criminals know it. When you lose power or water for a week, but all the resources are moved to the portion of the state where people are actually dead from the storm.

Every storm that comes ashore is another possibility of bad things. Just because you were fine through two hurricanes doesn't mean you were actually prepared. More likely just lucky. And if you were prepared, then you prepared for SHTF.

You have auto insurance - in case something bad happens

You have fire/flood insurance - in case something bad happens

You have health insurance........... in case something bad happens

You have life insurance........

Why would you not have some supplies?  - in case something bad happens.

If you are buying a missile silo that might be a little over the top, but having a few supplies, food, ammo, gas, etc is just being prudent and is akin to any other insurance type.

Always have a plan B

Natural disaster SHTF preps for me...not a lot. I live in the suburbs; I'm not going to pretend for one second that if a SHTF EOTWAWKI event happened I'd be doing anything other than bugging in until my meds run out and then count the days until I die. But hey, that's just my meds taking.

I HAD TO DRINK WHISKEY WITHOUT ICE ONCE.  How the fuck do you expect me to maintain civilized behavior without ice in my drink?

Failing to prepare is preparing to fail.

I take precautions and try to keep my family prepared to handle the unknown things in life.  It's not like I am preparing for some TEOTWAKI fantasy but there are so many other things that happen.

Being prepared really helped us the most when I was laid off for almost a year.  I had cash savings and food and other necessary things.  I never missed any payments and my kids never did without any of their needs.  In fact, I was able to keep my kids lives almost as good as it was when I was working.   First thing I did after getting employed again was to restock my savings and supplies.  Be ready...

SHTF in varying degrees and in varying degrees of likelihood.

I actively prepare for the most likely scenarios (power outages, tornadoes, house fires).  It just so happens that my hobbies, and learned behaviors* have prepared me for additional scenarios.

* My grandparents all went through the great depression, and their habits became my parents' habits which became my own.

There's TEOTWAWKI, and then theres SHTF.

Depending on your definition of SHTF, depends on what you -need- to prepare for.

What got me to prepare was a gas line break a number of years back. We ran out, quick. You could get gas... in lines... sometimes... or by driving south, beyond the break, which was about 1/2 way to Tucson. Casa Grande had gas.

As soon as the line was fixed... I ordered Jerry Cans. That was my start.

Having a little fuel, food, a generator... that's not paranoid. It's just smart.

I was going to post the same thing. I mean whatever floats yer boat I guess....

There are a hundred ways to 'prep' that don't involve massive stockpiles of X, Y, and Z. I'd argue that being extremely physically fit is probably one of the best things you can do, and has many more benefits than end-of-the-world scenarios. The same can be said of acquiring real-world skills and first-aid/trauma certification. But to deny the fact that tomorrow might be radically worse than today is to simply ignore history. We are at an incredibly fragile point IMO with broken economies and warring oligarchs. That historically has never ended well for normal people.

I don't consider myself a prepper, but my wife and I have several months of extended storage emergency food in addition to what is in our pantry, which is quite a bit.  We also have equipment for filtering, treating, and storing water.  Other random stuff includes cook stove, white fuel, candles, matches, KI tablets, N95 masks, crank radio, solar chargers, first aid/medical gear, and whatever else I am forgetting...in addition to standard hunting, fishing, and camping gear.

I don't expect to ever need most of it, but it's worth $500 or so to me to have enough to take care of my family for several months (at least) if the food trucks stop coming, the power fails, and/or water stops coming out of the tap.  We get a storm around here and the grocery store is cleaned out in a day.  What happens when a dirty bomb goes off in DC...20 miles east of us?

We started setting up this supply after talking about how much money goes through our hands each month and how little it would take to be better prepared.  Good luck buying this stuff in the unlikely event that the shit does actually HTF.  Our gear will not be for sale.  As someone else said, it's just like having an insurance policy.  You don't buy it thinking you'll need it.
