great pics
I especially love the troops with the kids. Can someone tell me if the mural of the flag and soldier that says we will never forget- is that painted by iraqis or americans? |

I've been trying to get an answer on this for a long time. Does anyone know what the symbol on this 101st Airborne Trooper's helmet is. I assume it is a unit designation. Does anyone know what unit? Anyone know what the symbol is? What it means? I was attached to the 101st while I was deployed but no one that I asked could answer these questions. |

He's a Rakkasan. 187th Airborne Infantry Regiment. |

The symbol is a Japanese Torii used by the 187th as a unit identifier. The 187th were the first troops to occupy Japan after WWII and they parachuted in. 'Rakkasan' is Japanese and loosely translated to 'falling down umbrella'. The 187th is currently the 3rd brigade of the 101st Airborne Division. Some pics of them. Entrance to Qandahar Airfield circa summer '02 187 vehicle GAC about to cross the border into Iraq. I was the gunner in the second truck for the division, of course all of 3rd Armored had cleared a hell of a path for us. March '03 Traffic control point right beside the Saddam Hussein Medical Complex in Baghdad. April/May '03 My favorite duty while waiting to come back stateside and ETS. August '03 yak |

Fightinghellfish is spot on, but the actual symbol is called a torii which is a is a traditional Japanese gate commonly found at the entry to a Shinto shrine. The name Rakkasan means falling down umbrella in Japanese. |

Just a semi educated guess. My understanding is that a lot of the land based robots being put into service in the WOT are build out of commercial off the shelf stuff. To streamline design and get the tools into our fighting men and women. So looking at his HUD on the helmet my guess is the controller is an COTS product being used to control some sort of robot. |

FightingHellfish, Yakarat and Stryker, Thanks for the info on the Rakkasans!

Don't think so. by the looks of it, this pic is from a training exercise, probably field testing the new uniform to see how it holds up. Notice the blank adapters on the rifles. From what I've heard, it will not be fielded until 2009. |
