The extra weld on armor seen on the turret and sides was common late war. I think alot was made from panther armor.

I thought it was generally factory added as part of the the "Wet" ammo storage protection package.

The added armor was discontinued with the wet storage, as it was deemed redundant, the factory added armor on the turret was originaly a fix for defective "thin" castings.

However that turret armor in the picture is thicker and more roughly cut than the factory jobs.

This Sherman has added frontal armor, flat plate kits were sent out to be installed in the field, some crews snagged two or three of these to give their tanks up to three inches of added frontal armor, as you can imagine, survival was a strong motivator.

Until I read your caption.  I thought that photo was taken much earlier in the war.  As that is an early M4 with the three piece transmission housing and small gun shield over the mantel.  One thing I noticed is that there seems to be a second layer of  armor plate welded to the right side of the turret.  I wonder if that tank had been knocked out before and was returned to service.

Quite a few early Shermans made it all the way to the end of the war, there was one photo I saw, taken at a base in germany, with shermans of every configuration all parked in tight rolls, there was a very early M4A1, with rounded cast hull, no added armor, somehow had survived to the end.

Actualy that is a M4AE2 "Jumbo".  Looks like that when through a field modificatoin where a 76mm gun was placed in the turret.  IIRC they started to do the field mods to the E2s around march of 45.

Here is another photo of a Jumbo.

Nice picture, feel free to add as many as you like, I find the CV90/120 family very interesting, I'm pleased to hear from someone who has first hand knowledge.

This looks very interesting, to our resident tankers, would that remote .50cal mount interfere with vision too much?

I've stayed up way too late last couple of nights looking at the two tank threads and the military picture thread.  Thanks for the loss of sleep, keep up the good work.

The reactive tiles on the skirts are a great idea unless you're the guy who has to PMCS the track!

WTF is that??

A giant suppressor for a self-propelled howitzer. Its somewhere in Germany, IIRC.  The locals complained about the noise from the guns firing, so thats what the crews have to use when testing the guns.

Kharn

So if the Germans' howitzers are silent do the French mime a surrender?  Do they mime being in an invisible POW camp?
