Interview with Newt Gingrich by a reporter at Politico. Someone here wished today that Newt was Speaker today. Hope he feels the same after reading the interview.

Newt Gingrich offers advice for how Mike Johnson can stay speaker.
https://www.politico.com/news/magazine/2024/04/19/newt-gingrich-mike-johnson-speakership-qa-00153117

With a conservative like Johnson in the speaker’s chair, Gingrich told me, it’s time for Republicans to shut up and fall in line. “The truth is, I would blame head-on the people who are acting like selfish idiots,” Gingrich said, name-checking Gaetz.

Having faced down his own Republican-led coup attempt in 1997, Gingrich urged Johnson to hold his ground and pass the foreign aid packages — even if it ultimately costs him the speakership.

“Brave men die but once,” he said. “A coward dies a hundred deaths.”

...

I think they self-define. I’d start with [Matt] Gaetz, but I would say the list goes on. He’s the super narcissist.

...

So first of all, he doesn’t have a real majority. He has a technical majority for the purpose of organizing committees and theoretically controlling the flow of legislation, but he doesn’t have a working majority on the Rules Committee. He doesn’t have an ability to deliver 218 votes for virtually anything. He has 30 or 40 members who ideologically wake up every morning knowing that they’re gonna vote no — they’re not sure what the issue is, but they know they’re going to vote no. And then he’s got this last 30 or 40 [members] who need to do something to go on TV and send out fundraising emails, and they don’t frankly care if they screw up our party or the country, if that’s what it takes for them to be so important. So he has an enormously complicated job.

...

The challenge you have once you have the majority is that you want to be positive and get something done — and the country expects you to get something done. So that’s why I think this is a real challenge. The demons that Gaetz unleashed by going after [Kevin] McCarthy are still out there. You can’t govern by shooting yourself in the head every day.

...

What would your message be to the hard-liners who are threatening to tank these bills and oust Johnson?

Decide if your love of country isn’t greater than your love of self.

I have nothing for the GOP... most of them. There are a few standouts.. the rest are worse than dems. At least dems openly hate you. GOP pretends to.. then betrays you over and over.

Gingrich is speaking wisely.  I don’t think people realize how badly the bomb throwing will cost conservatives and 2A rights in the long run, and maybe not even that far off.

I don’t think the Republicans know how being weak kneed and spineless are going to cost them and the country. If you’re only a little different than the democrats, what good are you?  Should have stuck to the guns on the southern border part of the bill. And if they had a brain they only needed a couple of lines in the bill. No more asylum claims at the border. All asylum seekers will be turned away period. Apply in your own or a neighboring country US embassy. Then tied the aid to it and not take up the issue again if it got voted down.

Gingrich was/is a POS.  He was great at playing a character, but in the end he has been nothing more than a warmongering, uniparty, anti freedom POS.  F him.

So you want to launder more money through Ukraine and throw money away in Israel?

Is that about right?

This thread is the inevitable manifestation of decades of political wishy-washiness. Perhaps someday there will be something that stops the laughter. Until then I suppose the clown act will continue until it has completely used up all its material.

Johnson has proven that he's no conservative.

For the 30 - 40 who wake up every morning to go vote no, Newt needs to remember hundreds of thousands voters just like me put them there to do exactly that.

Yes, shut up and fall in line behind the democrat speaker. Vote for all the shit the dems want because that’s what they were all elected to do.

I keep hearing what they can’t do, they can’t to this, they can’t do that. Yea, you’re right they can’t. But what can they do? They can stop the bleeding. They can stop spending. They could have stopped fisa.

What do we get? FISA and spending. And when they lose the majority it will be because they failed to stop fisa and spending.

This exactly. Newt who cheated on his current wife with his next wife through 3 divorces is not exactly a man of ethics and morals . I met him once. He seemed like a slimy car salesman in person .

I disagree.

The GOP needs to be purged with fire.  Matt Gaetz has done an excellent job highlighting the republican failures and demanding accountability.

I don't expect the house gop to accomplish anything and considering what our government typically "accomplishes" generally prefer it that way.

My idea of accomplishment would be disbanding most federal things, repealing 99% of federal law, going to a 4/5ths majority to pass anything and a sunset clause added to all laws requiring same 4/5ths to renew. Probably putting the smack down on states with laws which are unconstitutional as a common person would interpret the constitution not some bullshit web of precedence that would put a tomato in fruit salad.

I'm just as likely to win the lottery without buying a ticket while banging a supermodel and being struck by lightning so will settle for general stalemate.

The reality is the voters have changed their mind and the establishment in DC, on both sides, is too ossified to react.

They are in a corner. In the short term we can only chose between bad and worse. The funny part of politics is that's its really just a personality test.  We self sort into like minded groups. The issue is our personality type cares about principals more than outcomes. So when those thar claim to be on our side betray us, we take it far worse than when the other side does it   We knew they were snakes.

This is how you get a Trump. This is how we'll get the next person that rocks the boat or bucks the system.  We will begin to consciously look for people who will break the system, because the system no longer represents us and they are back stabbing cunts.

He's giving the least charitable version as possible as the explanation of the motivation to vote no for funding foreign turf wars over(actual) homeland security.

Just because you have principles and are unwilling to compromise on certain subjects doesn't automatically make you a a narcissist for not falling in line. A representative's job is to represent their constituency,  not be beat into submission by political factors outside of the topic in question for any given piece of legislation.

First I watched my Congressional GOP rep go full swamp and fight Trump on Building the wall.

Then I watched that same GOP Rep suddenly become Trump's darling and even ended up on the VP list.

Then I watched her (Elise Stefanik) turn around and vote to renew the FISA courts.

I'll only be pulling the lever for Trump this November, and it may be the last time I vote.

Fuck "republicans"

The people that hold those values and stick up for them, like Gaetz, are few and far between. So you get articles like this with quips from has been uniparty statesmen that call on the nostalgia of a time where everyone was fully compromised and the money flowed like it was a fucking lost Camelot.

I'm glad the people at least trying to paralyze the federal government are representing positions I mostly agree with, but the truth is as long as someone is doing it, good.

I'm in favor of financial and military aid for Ukraine to oppose Russia, and supporting our other allies around the world.

I'm also in favor of holding a vote on the bills, instead of letting one or two House members pretend they're Senators with a veto.

Do you trust Gaetz, MTG, on that basis? What about the guy who was fucking porn stars while his wife was pregnant? Though in Gaetz's case, it's underage girls who can't trust him.

If that's your litmus test, Mike Johnson is only one of them you should trust.

My message would be - when you find more Democrats than Republicans siding with you, you're doing something wrong. When you see it consistently, you need to step down. He's a RINO money slinger in my book and I have zero use for him.

He's NOT a conservative.
