Texas Faces Water Crisis

A Texas House Representative has called on Governor Greg Abbott to declare a "state of disaster" in response to water shortages in the Rio Grande Valley. The shortages are impacting business and agriculture, the state lawmaker has said.

The call came from Representative Terry Canales, a Democrat representing District 40 in southern Texas, in a letter sent to Abbott on Wednesday.

Water shortages pose another difficulty for Abbott who is already struggling to control the Texas-Mexico border against what he has termed an "invasion" of undocumented immigrants. His efforts have put him in direct conflict with the federal government, with the Supreme Court ruling in January that federal agents could remove razor wire placed along the border on Abbott's orders.

In his letter to Abbott, Canales wrote: "Please declare a state of disaster in our region.

"The situation has reached a point of crisis, and I believe a declaration of emergency is essential to mobilize the necessary resources and support for our community."

Canales urged Abbott to call on the Biden administration to increase pressure on Mexico over water it is treaty-bound to provide the United States under a 1944 agreement. Under its terms, Mexico is expected to provide 1.75 million acre-feet of water per five-year cycle. However, according to the International Boundary and Water Commission, it has only sent around 382,000 acre-feet of water in the current cycle which ends in October 2025.

Canales said: "Lower Rio Grande Valley farmers are running out of vital irrigation water. Compounding this issue is the alarming delay by Mexico in fulfilling its obligations under the 1944 Water Treaty, exacerbating the water shortage for our local farmers.

"We must find a means of applying pressure on Mexico to comply with the treaty and release the water owed to the United States."

Newsweek has contacted Governor Greg Abbott, the Mexican Embassy to the United States in Washington D.C., and Rep. Terry Canales for comment by email.

In February, a sugar mill in nearby Santa Rosa shut down with the loss of 500 jobs in part due to a lack of water for growing sugar.

Speaking to Border Report, David Flores, assistant manager of the southern Texan city of Mission, said drought contingency plans were being considered.

He said: "The water levels of both Amistad and Falcon reservoirs are very low—historically low.

"Coupled with that, we have historic growth here in the Rio Grande Valley. So when you add those two together, we are going to be forced to look at our drought contingency plan."

Mission is currently under Stage 2 water restrictions which limits water use in the city on certain days but only on a voluntary basis.

Liquid nitrogen fertilizer spill kills nearly 750K fish in Iowa river: officials

Hundreds of thousands of fish were killed earlier this month in a nearly 50-mile stretch of the East Nishnabotna River to the Missouri border due to a fertilizer spill in Iowa, state officials said.

On March 11, NEW Cooperative, Inc. in Red Oak reported to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) that a spill occurred on their Montgomery County premises.

About 1,500 tons (equal to 265,000 gallons) of liquid nitrogen fertilizer (32% solution) was released into a drainage ditch, which subsequently entered the East Nishnabotna River.

The spill happened due to an above-ground storage tank valve that was mistakenly left open over the weekend, the DNR said.

DNR Fisheries staff said the fish kill affected the entire 49.8 miles of the East Nishnabotna and Nishnabotna Rivers downstream of the spill and extended to Missouri’s section of the Nishnabotna River before concluding near the junction with the Missouri River.

As of Thursday, it was reported that a total of 749,242 fish had been killed, with the most affected species being the minnows, shiners, dace and chubs at 707,871.

Ongoing investigations are being conducted to determine the impact of the fertilizer release on other aquatic life.

According to Iowa state codes, a permit is required to discharge pollutants into a river.

The DNR is collaborating with its legal department to determine the next course of action regarding enforcement and restitution for the loss of aquatic life.

AT&T acknowledges massive data leak affecting 73MILLION users as the telecom giant resets account passcodes for customers - after previously denying they'd been compromised

- The phone carrier acknowledged a massive data leak and reset passcodes for its millions of customers this week
- The dataset affects around 7.6 million current AT&T account holders and 65.4 million former account holders

AT&T reset account passcodes for millions of customers this week after acknowledging a massive data leak that affected more than 73 million users.

The telecom giant said the leaked dataset appears to be from 2019 or earlier, impacting around 7.6 million current AT&T account holders and 65.4 million former account holders.

The leaked dataset includes names, home addresses, phone numbers, Social Security numbers, and dates of birth, as reported by TechCrunch.
.
.
AT&T customer account passcodes are four-digit numbers used to access user accounts either online or in retail stores.

In a statement released on Saturday, AT&T said: 'AT&T has launched a robust investigation supported by internal and external cybersecurity experts.

'Based on our preliminary analysis, the data set appears to be from 2019 or earlier, impacting approximately 7.6 million current AT&T account holders and approximately 65.4 million former account holders.'

'AT&T does not have evidence of unauthorized access to its systems resulting in exfiltration of the data set,' the statement said.

The company added 'it is not yet known whether the data in those fields originated from AT&T or one of its vendors.'

The shocking revelation comes after a data seller dumped massive rolls of alleged AT&T customer records on a cybercrime forum earlier this month.

The dataset contains 73million records including 49million unique email addresses, 44million Social Security numbers, and 43,000 dates of birth, according to Troy Hunt, a security researcher.

After obtained a copy of the dataset and analyzed it, Hunt said in a blog post that the leaked data was real.

The researcher, who owned data breach notification site Have I Been Pwned, asked his subscribers if they were AT&T customers and the data looked accurate.

Users have since come forward, saying the leaked data indeed contained their personal information, Hunt said.

Food shortages leave Cubans in anguish over next meal

HAVANA - One thought lingers all day in the mind of Diana Ruiz: How will the Cuban mother feed her 6-year-old son, a dilemma faced by parents across an island hit by blackouts and food shortages.

"The first thing I say when I get out of bed is, what am I going to give my son to eat? And when I go to bed, what can I give him for a snack, or for his breakfast?" Ruiz tells AFP from her home in Nuevo Vedado, a central district in Havana.

The 31-year-old Ruiz, who is four months pregnant, moves in the narrow space between her cupboard, which holds some rice and a few rolls of bread, and a fridge containing more rice, a pot with a little stewed meat, containers of water and some juice.

"That's all there is," she says hopelessly in her house where she also lives with her blind father.

A clamor over food shortages and blackouts led hundreds of people to demonstrate in at least four Cuban cities on March 17, the largest protests since historic anti-government marches on July 11, 2021.

The unusual demonstrations erupted first in Santiago de Cuba, the island's second largest city, which has endured up to 13 hours a day of blackouts. Many of the protesters were women.

Days later, President Miguel Diaz-Canel attributed the unrest to "an accumulation of long blackouts that greatly annoy the population."

Food shortages, he added, were due to "fractures in the timely distribution of the basic food basket."

A human rights group, Justicia 11J, reported this week that it tallied 17 arrests related to the protests, while Spain-based Prisoners Defenders told AFP it has documented the detention of 38 people, six of whom were released.

Appeals to UN

Authorities in 2023 said a lack of hard currency impeded imports required to provide basic food rations at highly subsidized prices to the island's 11 million people.

Meanwhile, according to official figures, agricultural production fell 35 percent between 2019 and 2023.

In February, Cuba requested for the first time support from the UN World Food Programme to guarantee the supply of milk to children, after announcing it would not be able to complete that month's rations.

At the beginning of the year, authorities also struggled to deliver bread due to delays in wheat shipments from abroad and breakdowns in four of the country's five mills -- resulting in the country meeting only about a third of total demand.

Although the capital does not suffer the long blackouts affecting the rest of the island, for many people food arrives in dribs and drabs.

"They come in small quantities, one pound today and in X days another pound," says Aracely Hernandez, 73, a resident of Bacuranao, a town on the outskirts of Havana.

The retiree says she receives a pension of 1,500 pesos ($12.50 at the official exchange rate) and that a package of chicken costs her 3,000 pesos outside the rationing system.

"You have to squeeze and pedal hard because everything is very expensive," she laments.

Why is Trader Joe’s impervious to all these food recalls?

Trader Joe’s is known for surprisingly low prices, friendly workers, a unique grocery product mix, its somewhat quirky house brand—and also, over the past year or so, for weird and sometimes scary-sounding recalls.

There have been at least three Trader Joe’s recalls this year, the most recent involving potential salmonella contamination in Trader Joe’s 50% Less Salt Roasted and Salted Whole Cashews earlier this month. The others involved potential plastic in 60,000 pounds of chicken dumplings, and potential listeria in products containing cotija cheese, which was part of a wider recall affecting multiple chains. This follows a clutch of recalls last year that inspired such alarming headlines as, “Trader Joe’s keeps issuing recalls. Rocks, insects, metal in our food. Is it time to worry?”

Apparently, many of the Trader Joe’s faithful don’t seem worried at all. The chain enjoys a fervent following for its low-priced bougie staples and rotating seasonal items; a following so fervent, they like to tout Trader Joe’s—often taking to TikTok to swap tales of kind-hearted cashiers, or show off their hauls.

And really, Trader Joe’s itself doesn’t seem too worried, either. It responded to an inquiry from Fast Company by reiterating a past statement that underscored its commitment to food safety, noting: “We err on the side of caution and are proactive in addressing issues,” and that “Our recall-related communications go well beyond regulatory requirements.”

The chain is hardly on the defensive. It’s raised some prices, recently bumping up the cost of bananas, long one of its most-celebrated bargains. News that it was opening a location in Springfield sparked celebration in the Missouri town—and disappointment when it clarified that it meant Springfield, Virginia. And, of course, its recently released $3 branded mini tote has already become one of 2024’s It objects. In other words, there’s not much (er, no?) hard evidence that the recalls are damaging the brand. To the contrary, it appears to be offering a case study in brand loyalty trumping negative news.

FBI Showing Up at Homes Over Social Media Posts

FBI Showing Up at Homes Over Social Media Posts

FBI agents were filmed visiting the home of a woman over a post she made on Facebook. The video has since gone viral, with people questioning whether this could violate constitutional protections on free speech.

What was left out of most conversations, however, was the question of what exactly the woman posted to make the FBI visit her home. Some of the woman’s public posts include open calls for people to join a so-called jihad.

The case also fits into a broader pattern. U.S. authorities seem to be showing deep concerns over a possible rise in radicalism and potential threats of terrorism.

The issue also ties in with a deepening rift among Democrats, mainly around Israel’s war against Hamas in Gaza, and ironically, also among conservatives who are opposed to federal authorities questioning people over their online posts.

Bird flu detected in person who had contact with infected dairy cattle in Texas

https://www.washingtonpost.com/health/2024/04/01/bird-flu-human-case-cow-texas/

This could end up being a big deal if more people become infected from cows.  Cattle to Cattle transmission of H5N1 bird flu have been recorded. Cattle don’t seem to die of it just get sick.  But if they start transmitting it to people in large numbers expect the USDA to change its stance and require the culling of infected herds.  Cattle numbers in the country are already at 80 year lows.  We don’t need that number going much lower.

It is just reiterating a point that many should already be familiar with but there’s also a thread in GD were several think they are immune from home invasions because they perceive themselves as living in a nice neighborhood.

I just listened a second time and missed the ‘24 colonies’ comment, so can’t really comment on that.

China issues travel warning for the US

China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on March 29 warned citizens of challenging travel conditions to the US due to a spike in cases where Chinese students and company employees were subjected to “unwarranted interrogations and harassment” by US airport law enforcement officers.

China’s travel advisory for citizens entering the US urges safety precautions and preparation for “various unexpected situations”, detailed a South China Morning Post news report.

The ministry and the Chinese embassy and consulates in the US have lodged a solemn representation to the US.

Since November 2023, at least eight Chinese students with valid documents have been searched, interrogated or sent back from Washington Dulles International Airport alone, according to a tally by Chinese media.

A biological sciences PhD candidate has also claimed to have been subjected to a body search, eight hours in an interrogation room, and 12 hours in solitary confinement before being deported by officials at Dulles airport in December last year. She was due to return to the US to continue her studies.

These incidents appear to be a setback in the pledge by both countries to facilitate educational and other exchanges in recent months. In November, while on a visit to the US, Chinese president Xi Jinping said China would invite 50,000 young Americans to study in the next five years.

For some reason, the interview with Michael Yon in Canada and the economic issues really reminded me of the push for a North American Union back during the George W Bush years.  If I remember correctly, they even had plans for a new currency along with abolishing the borders between Canada, The United States, and Mexico.

Allegations of a Plan or Blueprint under Bush

The "plan to create" a North American Union as a regional government—comprising a collective government for the United States, Canada, and Mexico—is "directly stated only" in the May 2005 task force report Building a North American Community published by the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR), Jerome Corsi wrote June 26, 2006.

The "blueprint" which President George W. Bush is following to create a North American Union was "laid out" in the May 2005 report, Corsi wrote May 19, 2006. "The CFR report connects the dots between the Bush administration's actual policy on illegal immigration and the drive to create the North American Union."

Bush is "pursuing a globalist agenda to create a North American Union, effectively erasing our borders with both Mexico and Canada," which, Corsi wrote, is "the hidden agenda behind the Bush administration's true open borders policy."

The plan, Corsi wrote, is "contained" in the Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America, "little noticed" by the mainstream media when President Bush, Mexico's President Vicente Fox, and Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin "created it" March 23, 2005, in a summit held at Waco, Texas.

A North American Union is being created "through a process of governmental regulations" and without ever "having to bring the issue before the American people for a clear referendum or vote," Corsi wrote May 24, 2006.

“North American Union” Back on Deep State Agenda

After being derailed by activists and exposure, the Deep State scheme to merge the United States, Mexico, and Canada under a European Union-style continental regime is back on the front burner, warns The New American magazine’s Alex Newman in this episode of Behind The Deep State. Earlier this month, Joe Biden and the government leaders of Mexico and Canada met in Mexico city to sign the Declaration of North America (DNA). But this is not a new agenda. In fact, Alex goes through the history of this effort stretching back two decades in North America and far longer in Europe. Meanwhile, similar continental and regional regimes—the African Union, Putin’s Eurasian Economic Union, and many more—are being imposed on people around the world. This has been stopped before. It can and must be stopped once again!

Yeah, it’s hard not to see that possibility.  That sure seems to accomplish a lot of their goals with one undertaking.
