Was that about the time that people across the country was having problems with service?

My brother in law's family didn't have cell service for hours one day.

sure it can. a upgrade to your core routers easily causes all sorts of problems. It aint like they update a single router like in your home, they do it in mass across entire ecospheres.

Completely agree. AT&T had managed to fuck up my and my mother's accounts so badly, I had to walk away without my phone or number and they kept billing for months after the service was stopped. I have never left a company without paying what was due but I had to with these idiots. They reactivated my mother's old cell months after it was shut off, added a bunch of unknown charges to my bill and refused to take them off so I just quit paying the bills and walked away.

They are next level of incompetence.

I don't believe that's possible due to data check type processes but who knows. The second was a real concern though as it comprised not only the level of clearance held but also the eQuip background info. So if we view this as critical information to enrich other databases that we have to assume they have it's a pretty straight line to the assumption that they can quickly establish who working with who is/was and what they might be currently be working on as well as past work.

Is there a good way to mitigate this other than setting up accounts with 3 other people I didn't give permission to retain my information?

I got a notice on Creditwise (Capital One), my full name, address, email addy, phone, and SSN.

It had the xxx-xx-####. I don’t know if just my last four were released or CW blocks the other numbers.

Here I thought it was from doing my Form-1 or PrintScan.

Freeze your credit reports at all four bureaus (TransUnion, Equifax, Experian, and Innovis).
https://www.equifax.com/
https://www.experian.com/
https://innovis.com/
https://www.transunion.com/

Chex Systems is used by banks when opening new accounts to look for deadbeats who have a history of overdrafts.  You can add a security freeze to your identity so no one else can open bank accounts in your name.
https://www.chexsystems.com/

Add a fraud alert to your National Consumer Telecom and Utilities Exchange (NCTUE) data file. Phone companies and utilities use the NCTUE when opening new service accounts.
https://nctue.com/consumers/

Other reporting agencies where you should freeze your personal data: SafeRent, Core Logic TeleTrack, and LexisNexis
https://saferentsolutions.com/fraud-prevention/
https://teletrackfreeze.corelogic.com/
https://consumer.risk.lexisnexis.com/freeze

Create your account on the Social Security web site so no one can beat you to that:

THESE ARE ALL FREE.

The only way to make this stop is to stop allowing companies to skate by with credit monitoring.

I think they need to start executing folks that do this.

each time there is a massive data breach with compaines and all that data gets put out on the dark web, that is a terroristic level of damage/potential, imho.

You start offing folks that do that, I bet it wont be happening as much.  Make it public too.

At the time of the breach, it had been over 3 years since I'd been an AT&T customer. A better question would be why they needed an SSN for a home internet account and why any PII isn't totally purged from their system when an account is closed.

Agreed.  I don't even deal with sensitive customer PI at work, but I have to take training every year on it and know better.

No one actually purges data. They just flip the 'Active' field in the 'Customer' table from 1 to 0.

With as many data breaches as there have been, virtually everyone's info has been compromised at this point. I've had to deal with an attempted identify theft every spring for years. Things are going to be interesting over the next decade. If your company hasn't already been hit, expect that it will, and there is a relatively high probability that you are already compromised. The majority of companies have accounts with high levels of access that have been compromised for a long time. Sometimes the hackers wait years before attacking, or never attack since the access is valuable.

They do, but you can choose not to supply it. Just got ATT fiber and cell a month ago. I hate ATT the company, but Cox internet was slower and more expensive, VZ has gone to shit in my area and I save with a bundle, so. fwiw, ATT give a $10 discount on cell if you have AARP (they don't care your age.)

This is the shit that really pisses me off.  Scammers are in on it as well.  They will take advantage of you in a heartbeat.

For instance I got the notification my bank account was compromised in a breach lately (not this one).  I then got a text "from my bank" last week if I sent a zelle payment of 1k, please respond YES or NO.  Needless to say I never signed up for zelle and answered NO.  The text that responded said thank you for answering we will contact you shortly.  Then I got to thinking and called my bank, they NEVER sent any type of fraud message to me.  While I was on the phone the scammers called me phone spoofing my banks 1-800 number.

I want to say this phone call sounded 100% legit, did the correct prompts of my bank, never asked me for any personal information, totally professional basically and they were not from India or any other country you could tell.

Where the call took a turn is when they said they needed to lock my account down and then they would issue me a new username and password after around 3 hours after the security team was done verifying any transaction.  They would send me a link to initiate the "lock down."  I was writing all the information down and wish I could have recorded the call but before I lived in a 2 party state and never picked up an app to record on my cell phone .  At this point I told him I needed to hang up and call my bank.  He was like why since I was talking to him (my bank), I said this phone call was spoofed and doubt your real...then I got the sound of silence and he hung up.

Someone better come up with a good reason to be able to spoof a phone call these days.  I could see back in the day a big doctors office where the doc calls you from a number that looks like the office number but with technology today the doctor could call the office and then route the call that way.  I want to see the exact number call me, not some fake bullshit.

This, my credit is locked at the main 3 credit agencies.....honestly didn't know about the 4th....  Thanks @Bubbles

I unlock it for a few days, such as my last security clearance, and let it lock back on its own.  I never touch it otherwise.

Not to drift this off topic but I keep seeing these adds for locking your home title.  I have to assume it is asshats taking out loans against your home and then you loose it.  If this is the case I assume that locking my credit should prevent 99% of this happening.  If this is not the case how do you protect yourself from these turds.
