No can do.

I don’t have anything against electric cars, no interest in ever owning one, but an EV Mustang just seems wrong. Call it something else, amirite?

Hanging out in the shop. Got a blown airbag on the tractor.

Glad it failed here at the yard and not 100 miles down the road! Should only set me back an hour or so.

Got most of my work done in L.A. today.

One stop early in the morning, and then pin it (well, not really, when you’re running 55) and north through the Grapevine.

Biggest issue is load weight - I had two single-pallets put in the nose, due to a weird, heavy but small load.   Still looks like I’ll be over weight on the drives, so will have to figure that out in the morning.    I’ll run over the scale on my way out of the truck stop and see if I can get away with not reworking the load I guess.

How much fuel are you going to burn getting over the pass and before a DOT scale?

I had to dump all the chains out of my chain locker onto another truck and get down to less than a quarter tank of fuel before hitting the scale at the top of Raton Pass inorder to make weight, made it with 40lbs to spare

At half a tank (or so) of fuel now, and reading 67psi on the airbags.    Usually I like to keep it around 62.   64 is really pushing it.   I expect I’m about 34,500(?) at 67psi.

Had a really cool photo I took of one of the trucks heading north over Raton in a snow storm.

Ugh.    Off to rework this load, instead of taking a nap.

Slept from about 2-6pm yesterday.    Then awake for about five hours, tried to sleep again, alarm at 3:45am, and been at it since.  Long day.   I’m tired.  And now I get to go play giant tetras.

I’d post photos, but need a better way of hosting than what I used for my ad in the EE.   That was a royal pain.   Any suggestions?

Edit:   Reworked the load here on the trailer.   Got it down to about 62psi, with the trailer tandems in forwardmost position, so I should be good to go, even with full tanks!

Not recent, but from entertainment tour days.

Ford Field, in Detroit.    Don’t have too many photos, and in fact had to snag one from my best friend who still has some photos.

The tunnel to get in here was really tight - tandems had to be all the way forward to make the turn off the alley into the tunnel, then slide the tandems all the way to the rear once you were in the tunnel, but before proceeding down it, as you’d hit the roof with the tail of the trailer on the ‘steps’ or steep drops on the floor of the tunnel  if the tandems were left forward.

I popped the tunnel roof with my trailer tail going in - one of the first trucks in - but didn’t do any damage and didn’t realize what had happened.     One of the next guys in had some damage from it, and we finally figured out what was happening when going down across the steep transition section.

Since I left the tour and have been hauling food, no interesting photos of loads, but I like taking photos of the views or nature.

Oops, wrong country…

A couple days off with a rented motorcycle…

Caught in a storm.

Birds…lots of birds.

Time off again…

Ruins.

Mosque.

Fun in the sun for a day - rented Camaro SS.

A true friend.   I got this photo of Craig while we were exploring in L.A. with a down day we had while dealing with a tour related vendor.     He passed away less than a year from when I took this photo.   A man of impecable character, who made a lasting difference in my life by his actions, rather than a lot of words.

I'm happy not to offer service in the people's republic.

Last week a shipper did this. I did slide the tandems back and even it out. 1/2 fuel, and I did have a well balanced breakfast that morning.

This was me at the weigh station 40 miles up the road, and how I know it worked. I got pulled up on the scale behind another guy getting chewed out over the loudspeaker for not following instructions. I creeped across (axle weigh) to a solid green light and no commentary from the booth.

Do you not have a California legal truck, or simply choose not to go?

That scale ticket is special.    What state let you roll?

The latter. As a rule, my trucks don't go west of I-35. I have family on the west coast, but there are much better options to get there for a visit than in a commercial truck.

Originally Posted By Woodchuck1:

Georgia. With a few exceptions, most of the states I travel the diesel cops won't even look up from their porn videos for anything less than 1,000 lb over axle or gross.

1,120 over gross was risky, but at that point a $200-ish ticket would have been cheaper than wasted fuel and time going back to have one skid pulled off. May have helped that I have clean, late model equipment in good repair and can read and understand direction signs printed in English. Still sticking with the Jedi mind trick story tho.

After crossing that scale, there was only one more likely to be open the remaining 800 miles of that trip. From experience, odds were good that one would let me pass as well, especially having burned off another 150 lb of fuel. The rest were 99% sure to be closed at the time I passed thru, or states that don't operate dedicated weigh stations.

I'm only 73,500lbs or so with these Camrys, but I always get the green light on the Pre-Pass so it doesn't matter.

@Woodchuck1 You got one of those fancy ones. Mine are just the regular old style that look like a toll transponder, but with the red/green lights.

@OverScoped Prepass is a transponder-based weigh station bypass system. Carriers pay a subscription, mine has gone up over the years, but around $16 a month each IIRC. It gives the scale master instant 411 about the truck and carrier, to decide whether to send a bypass signal or bring it in on the real scale, or just for a look. Most have weigh-in-motion out on the highway too. It's not precise, but if you hit it with over 70k gross you get their attention. I think they can set thresholds to automatically send in trucks over a certain weight.

If you're getting weighed all the time and never stopped, then whoever is loading your truck is doing it right. If you're actually in PA, then you know the diesel cops will stop you if there's even a whiff of anything amiss. They're usually pretty scarce, but when they're working expect a latex glove treatment if stopped. PA troopers don't fuck around with trucks.

I'm always too heavy. Even bobtail I'm 15,000 on my steers and I get kicked over to the scale for extra scrutiny.

Only 300 or so miles for the day but it was 95 degrees and 83% humidity at the port.  Fucking brutal.

I elected to lay it down at the Marriot in the background rather than sit through two or more hours of Friday evening rush hour traffic to get to the north side of Houston.  I'll just get up at 0400 and roll in.

No joke. The eastern 1/3 of the state is under construction.   Even 29 immediately north of Sioux Falls has some construction ongoing.

Pulling a relic around for a little while today. 1972 Butler.

This one sits way more than it’s used. Whenever it’s empty and has been sitting for a few days, I have to beat on the brake drums to get the brakes to release. She won’t drag loose lol. Loaded isn’t a problem.

It passes inspections routinely though. And it actually unloads pretty well. But I try to only pull this trailer at night, since I would definitely pull me over if I were a DOT cop and saw this fossil rolling down I-20. It’s got algae and moss growing on it.

I like it a lot. While it doesn’t have the classic long hood of a W9, most everything else is the same. Plenty of room inside for comfort and storage space. It’s a glider also, so that’s a huge plus for me. I’ve been in this particular truck for five years now, and have politely turned down 3 or 4 brand new Pete 389s. While we all love that big hood, this T800 has been great to me. So I’ll be hanging onto it as long as I can.

The interior is a big part of why it’s nice. Nicer inside than any vehicle I’ve ever bought on my own.
