Hmmm... not sure how to view this. It would add stability to have a member country in that part of the world, but it also could mean they would get some more advanced technology. But apparently they would not be full a member in the sense of defending other NATO allies if I read it right.

"BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) — Argentina formally requested on Thursday to join NATO as a global partner, a status that would clear the way for greater political and security cooperation at a time when the right-wing government of President Javier Milei aims to boost ties with Western powers and attract investment. The request came as NATO’s Deputy General Secretary Mircea Geoana held talks in Brussels on regional security challenges with visiting Argentine Defense Minister Luis Petri. Geoana said he welcomed Argentina’s bid to become an accredited partner in the alliance — a valued role short of “ally” for nations that are not in NATO’s geographical area and not required to take part in collective military actions. NATO membership is currently limited to countries of Europe, Turkey, Canada and the United States."

Not a member. A "global partner" i.e., not part of the alliance but cooperate in joint exercises and stuff. Mongolia, Colombia, and Pakistan are already NATO global partners. This is a complete nothing burger.

Meh, it will be just like NATO members Greece and Turkey.  If war with Russia ever breaks out, they'll probably start shooting each other.

It’s very smart, because Brazil is an economic powerhouse which could easily overwhelm Argentina.    America has always maintained the status quo, but if we are done doing that, Argentina needs to be part of a military alliance.

Additionally, it’s a cheap way for Argentina to get the credibility they need to secure more loans to re-boot their economy.

Bigger issue:

Brazil is going left as fuck, and in an open economic alliance with Russia and China (BRICS). Argentina sees a real threat here. They already deal with illegal Chinese fishing fleets, only a matter of time before it's the PLAN.

While their current leader makes me optimistic, their history does not.

Yep, thanks to geography Turkey has NATO by the balls and they know it.  They control the Black Sea, occupy NATO's southern flank, and have the closet NATO base to Iran.  NATO wouldn't kick them out even if they wanted to.

However, it ends the whole Falklands thing. They’d actually have to go war with themselves if they attacked again…

I understand all that. But then I ask what's the point of Erdogan isn't going to live up to his end of the bargain?  He's pals with Russia, and do you think he would let us base out of Turkey to go after Iran?

An assumed condition of being a member of NATO is that you are an actual ally of the other members. I'm not sure Turkey qualifies anymore. Not since Erdogan purged the military anyway.

No you're not.  Their military has been chronically underfunded for decades, to the point that surplus early model F-16s are a huge step up for their Air Force.

Interesting.  Very good point.     Argentina is faced with making a decision on which side to ally themselves with.     It all comes down to money and resources.
I’ve been watching the Chinese fishing fleets plundering the Chilean side.    It’s a thing to behold.   Sometimes it’s lit up like a huge City down there.    Maybe we can get Chile into Nato too.

I think they already told Biden to pound sand on using Incirlik for air strikes but yeah, I get your point.

Turkey loves playing both sides, and quite frankly we won't know which side they come down on until the shooting starts.
