Cars are between $2.00 and $11.00 to go over the Francis Scott Key Bridge.   Trucks as much as $36 toll.   Now that revenue goes to zero.

The bridge was opened on March 23, 1977, named for amateur poet Francis Scott Key (1779–1843), the author of the lyrics to the American national anthem, "The Star-Spangled Banner". The Key Bridge was a toll facility operated by the Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA). The bridge was the outermost of three toll crossings of Baltimore's Harbor, two tunnels and one bridge.

The bridge carried an estimated 11.5 million vehicles annually.

That's probably a $50-75 million dollar hit on revenue.  Minus what they recapture on increased pay on other tolls.

Seems that when a DEM gets into office the tolls are raised.   Only to be lowered when a Republican gets into office.

Send the bill to whoever couldn't fix the ship and sent it back out with known problems.

How much revenue is the harbor losing while the bridge is blocking shipping traffic?

It's freaking 6 bucks to go through the Baltimore tunnel, 6 bucks each way.   What are the chances of that going up 'temporarily' I ask rhetorically.

Pennies compared to lost cargo money

But I suspect they will sue to come out ahead financially from both losses

Lots of levers the govt can push up

Property taxes
Sales taxes
State income tax
Vehicle registration fees

A much bigger deal is all the sugar that [used to, before this week] gets processed there.
That is going to affect the entire country.
I do hope that it somehow benefits the sugar beet farmers in the U.S., though.  That's the only good thing I can think of that can come from this.

They need to start hiring the DEI instructors for the bridge project.

And why were no social workers called in the minutes after the bridge fell? Opportunity wasted.

Quick math at 11 million (cars for simplicity) at $4 per car is over $120k per day averaged out. Ouch.

A domino spokesperson was on the radio yesterday saying that they had just received two large shipments and that they have enough raw material to operate for 6-8 weeks, as well as a lot of finished product in warehouses.
So hopefully they get the channel open in 5-6 weeks and no disruption to production.

I'm betting this breaks the record from the Big Dig.

That was estimated $2.8B and Boston sucked out $8.08B by the end.

Baltimore is going to take a hit because it's Baltimore, but daddy govt will shovel piles of money higher than the span of the bridge to them

Baltimore is the largest port for imported car arrivals. They are parked out in huge lots awaiting processing.

This will hurt a lot.

Also a big port for exporting coal from WV and KY.

I hope they recover all the bodies.   How many congressmen owned companies are going to get no bid contracts to repair the bridge?  In for the financial shenanigans ! I feel for the folks working and driving on the bridge that died. A friend asked me why didnt they drop anchor in a last ditch attempt to maybe stop the ship?

As I understand it, the ship did drop anchor, but it didn't stop it in time.

Wait. It's a toll bridge? Seems like whoever is getting the toll money should pay out of their own pockets [1] to build back better instead of Biden stealing from taxpayers in other states.

[1] plus whatever they get from their insurance and suing the ship owner/operator. Same as when another driver ploughs into the back of my car.

Louisiana had a toll to cross the Sunshine bridge across the MS river one way. When it was finally paid off they stopped the toll. The original bridge to nowhere, bridge with no approaches for a while.

How could you tell if it did? I mean, the difference between where it was and the absolute bottom of the hill seems to be about the height of the average street curb.

Any stats on total revenue collected vs total cost.

As everyone saying the bridge will make traffic suck, but the port is the most imperative.

Clear the debris and charge the shipping company for 20+ car ferries. And 4x terminals
