Howdy all,

My son just got his honorable discharge from the Navy. He was an information systems technician for subs (ITS), and wants to look at infosec in the civilian sector now. He has TS/SCI clearance. What certs or training should he be looking into? Thanks in advance.

Start with CompTIA and move from there.
  • CompTIA Security+
  • CompTIA PenTest+
  • CompTIA CySA+

Most businesses run something on "the cloud"  I'd start with after CompTIA certs.
  • AWS Certified Security   Specialty
If he likes auditing
  • Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA)
Or get into a degree program that has a specialty like digital forensics.

as a side, have him look at WGU, western gov university.
most of the classes final exams were the comp tia cert test.
so you get two for the price of one. the degree and the certs at the same time.
all you can eat type deal one fee for as many classes as you can take in a semester.
don't do it like the advisers want you to, loading up all your easy classes first.
I did 4 classes a semsester, 3 easy 1 hard.
well hard in that I had to read how they wanted the answers. vs how to actually do them.
then if I finished, I took on the next class I considered hard and finished that one if I could. if not, no harm, no foul, you get to move it to the next semester as long as you complete 12 hours a semester.
all online except the final test.

Certs would depend on the schools he went to and systems and software he was qualified on.  A friend's son joined the Marines as a systems admin, then he received his CCNA cert while he was active.  Instead of sitting in an air conditioned data center,  the USMC assigned him to an artillery unit as a network admin.

I second what MateFrio said.

My son has a sweet gig after getting all of those certs and specializes in writing threat detection rules for cloud services like AWS/GCS/Azure.
