Awwww...

We had to do the restricted activity bit for an 8 month old lab once. Trying to keep a lab that young from exerting herself over the required time period was quite the challenge.

You can eliminate heartworms for less than half that using the slow kill method with Doxycycline and Ivermectin.  The lab in my avatar had them when she first showed up in 2018.  The vet quoted $900.  I spend maybe $400 on the meds and did it myself.

With the slow kill method you don't have to keep the dog inactive.  That was important with a 75# year old lab.

@imperfectlyperfect3

There is an article titled a combination of doxycycline and ivermectin is adulticidal in dogs with naturally acquired heartworm disease that I have in PDF, but I can't find the full article again online.

I can email it to you or upload it to dropbox and give you a link if you PM your preference.

The article outline the study done on several infected dogs and gives the dosages and directions for administration.

Exercise restriction is required for the slow kill method. Your dog got very lucky.

https://www.heartwormsociety.org/veterinary-resources/veterinary-education/ahs-board-speaks-out/507-the-ahs-protocol-vs-slow-kill

Went through this with a rescue. It was no fun. But the reason for the exercise restriction is that no matter how they are killed, the dead heart worms are in the blood. As they break down, you get little fragments of dead heart worm floating about.  Higher blood flow -> more and bigger bits.

These bits of heart worm corpses can cause blockages in blood vessels, leading to all manner of issues.

There is a reason vets don’t use slow kill as the preferred regime - and it is for the welfare of the infected dog.
