Usually we say to stick to what the manual calls for.
That said, I run 0-40 in my Audi which I not listed as a possibility in the manual. |

0w-30/5w-30 or 0w-40 depending on where you live. If warm climate, with more milage I might run the 0w-40

5w30 full synthetic for the 3.0l. The 0w30 recommendation is a somewhat recent updated recommendation. Normal temps, 5w30.

My 2008 328 has given 175k trouble free miles on a steady diet of Euro spec (BMW LL-01 I think?) 5w30. Love that little turd, can't bring myself to get rid of it. It just keeps chugging along.

5/30 or 5/40. Change it at 5-7k miles and the n52 will last you for ever. My daily is a n52 powered x3 pushing 402k miles. No major work besides oil leaks, coolant repairs and vanos gears and solenoids.

Drop the fluid and replace the pan/filter or just filter depending on style. if you have a plastic pan the filter is built in. Then refill the fluid. The trans solenoids occasionally fail but not too common. |

Someone else mentioned it, not sure what weight but it will likely need to be bmw LL01 rated and that is the euro spec mobile one

It’s a pretty solid platform overall, a few odd things like rear springs breaking and noisy blower motors. The a/c condensers corroded and leak ect. But not too many major issues make sure to replace the belt and tensioner as regular maintenance the tensioner bends over time from only using a single aluminum mounting bolt and will kick the belt off, causing it to get sucked into the crank seal. Just watch the edge of the belt on the tensioner pulley and replace it If the belt overhangs the pulley.

Whatever the owners manual states, don't fuck with it. My E-46 required 5-30 synthetic and I used Castrol brand.
Even if the engine is starting to use oil, you should stick with the recommended weight because it just not bottom end lubrication , it things like camshafts and VANOS that need that weight of oil to work properly or fail expensively miserably. Stick with what it's supposed to have. If not you may find that your BMW has bricked itself and will be laughing at you and snickering 'you dumbass, do you know how much this is going to cost you NOW ?' |

I use 0-30 in my daughters 2011 X5 . I think it is more important to prime the engine by cranking without starting first. I pull the fuel pump fuse. The 3.0 is easily damaged if it runs dry even briefly. At 195,000 miles . I installed a 114,000 replacement but updated the rod bearings to king bearings. Attached File |

If I drive it like a sane person it'll be fine. Basically I top off the oil around 5500-6000 miles in the summer and never in the winter. |

I believe the NA I6s all used 5w30 Castrol. Mobil 1 5w40 Euro can be substituted.
I don’t really remember anymore since I sold my ‘03 530i. Still keep 10w60 for the M. |
