The jewel of my collection is my grandfather's WWII Ithaca he used in Japan as a marine.  Ironically it's also the platform I've really disliked since I started carrying on my 21st bday.  Was never fond of the weight, the low capacity, and the hammer bite.  At the same time I actually shoot them VERY well.  Feels very natural and the triggers are great!  Also have a SA stainless mil-spec.  While it'd be a completely different direction for me CCW-wise... giving some thought to trying one out.

The two options would be a drop in beaver tail for my SA (to eliminate the hammer bite)....or buy a more carry-worthy 1911 with a better safety lever, beaver tail and light rail.

Any good options under $1k nowadays?

Thanks!!

Very happy with my Colt/CZ combat commander. I had one from a few years ago that wouldn’t function reliably.

I regularly carry a Colt Competition in .45 that I got for under 8 bills not long ago. But it doesn't have a rail because I like females, so there's that.

I ,too, like shoot and carry the 1911.

I currently own a Smith & Wesson scandium framed 1911 with a bobbed grip , an Sig ultra compact, Springfield ultra compact and a Colt 1991a1(cco).

I currently carry the Colt but rotate with the others when I feel like it.

All of these guns were bought used for under 700 bucks.

Girson is making a good 1911 for the money. Just shoot it and see how it performs. Mine just needed an extractor replaced and fired 500 rounds without a problem.
Just find a good holster for carry. I used El Paso saddlery because it sets well on my hip so that I forget I have it.

The tisas have been getting good reviews.

The Springfield ronins or garrisons would be solid choices too.

Colt Defender, light weight frame and have a very good reputation

However it’s a compact model if that’s it problem for you

Very easy to live with, mine goes on when get out of bed and comes off at bed

It gets rust but always goes bang

Are you wanting a government model 5” or a commander 4.25”?

I’d saw something with a LW frame.

Good question.

I’ve got a Rock Island Commander in 9mm (17 round capacity) and it’s been perfect, but not sure if I just got lucky - haven’t really looked into their overall reputation.

Just saw them at PSA...definitely inexpensive!!   Not early 2000's RIA for $299 inexpensive but for today's prices inexpensive.

I've also liked the idea of the Springfield EMP (I think they make Ronin EMP's now.), but I don't know how reliable they are.

Mine was under $1K by far.

But that was a long time ago and before MIM parts.

4.25” carries very nice.

I’d go 4.25” if you carry IWB and 5” if you carry OWB.

Agreed Tisas have been getting great reviews.  My father in law has had one for a while with over 1K rounds and it’s been 100%.  But guns from turkey I would vet before you start carrying.

I carried a G19 for over 16 years, everyday, everywhere..

A few months ago, I bought a Springfield TRP. I have been carrying it. The weight and size don't bother me much. Shoots so much better but has drawbacks mentioned.

Now I find that Springfield makes a 9mm, double stack, 4.25" 1911..

There’s a nice Colt O-4091U stainless Commander in the EE right now for $875, if you’re seriously looking.

I have no connection to the seller, but if I was back in CONUS right now, I’d buy it from him.

The 4.25” Commander is a sweet carry gun.

My first vote for a carry gun would be a $350 CZ P-10C, but you want ancient, heavy crap for some reason.

Stick with a 4-5" gun, the little 1911s tend to suck for reliability.  As far as reasonable offerings, I'm pretty impressed with Tisas for the money, Springfield Ronin is also a good deal.  Once you buy it, get some good mags (Wilson or CMC Powermags) and shoot it, a lot.  Run a shitload of your chosen carry ammo through it before trusting it.

Can someone please clarify this for me?

Why the reference to sexual preference when looking at the issue of whether someone utilizes a light on their gun??

Thanks

Shitload of carry ammo??  Do most people actually drop $1k-$2k on carry ammo just to do this for 1911's (or any carry gun)?

Thanks!

I would, 1911s can be pissy about hollow points, so you better test it.

For any carry gun, usually I run 1000 rounds of practice ammo through it, then 500 rounds of HP, if it doesn't pass that test without any issues, I'm not carrying it.  So your $1K new gun is now gonna cost you $2K, which is why I hardly ever switch carry guns and also why 45s are off the table for carry.

I carry a Tisas 4.25 stingray carry 45, bobtail, alum frame, nice trigger, undercut trigger, no rail. It is noticeably lighter than a colt 5 inch.

Yeah?  They seem really well liked but between a SA and a Turkish made gun, I would and have gone with SA.  Plus if I ever wanted to get rid of it, I'm guessing a SA would hold it's value.

Just thinking out loud at this point.

Thanks for sharing!

None, literally none. You can hear all the anecdotal evidence in the world but ultimately I wouldn't trust my life to a small 1911. I've had numerous Wilsons and Nighthawks that were still only 98% reliable.

1911's are great, but nowadays, I'd say just for range fun.

Under $1000 for a low capacity heavy CCW gun you can't beat a RIA.

I mean if you're going to test your fate, might as well go full risk.
