I was really impressed by the guy that spent three years in the Arkansas National Guard who managed to attend the entire 18 series MOS course catalog AND deploy to Iraq three times all the while being promoted to E7 without somehow, going thru a single leadership school. (He was 26 years old)

Did you know there are Special Forces Artillery Battalions in the Arkansas National Guard?

I'd not believe it purely on the basis that such a schedule would mean the troop never got a class cancelled or delayed or otherwise fucked up at ANY POINT in three years. Bullshit.

In other news, 12 years ago I was involved in flight testing a payload and the project engineers told me where I could get a patch. The computer I saved the link on shit the bed and last month, in a period of drunken recall, I stumbled upon the site and searched. I found the patch I have been wanting for over a decade.

There are reasons to black out and sanitize certain items on a DD214, but it isn't about being classified, it's about not wanting people to see certain personal info.

I have no idea about 'classified' stuff.  But DD214's can be wrong and missing info.  I know.

They can also be wrong with extra info. I gained an MOS when I left the USMC.

I don't have to worry about the SSN showing, they got mine wrong!  Didn't even notice it for a number of years after I got out. A couple things are also missing on it, but not because anything I did was classified.  Funny/ not funny story, I got one of the repro Mitchell camo M-65 field jackets several years ago, (love that pattern) I  had some old ACU's and took the velcro panels off it and had them sewn onto the sleeves so I could wear my unit patches.  Ive had several people stop me and accuse me of stolen valor, usually saying something like they know Im a fake because the jacket isnt real,
well NO kidding, its just a tribute.  The rest of the time folks ask if I was a sniper because my combat patch is 420th Engineers.   Makes the thing not worth wearing.

The Army had to redo my DD214 before issuing it and still got things wrong. I had spent 2 years in the Army Reserves before going Regular Army. I never received a DD214 when I switched components and pretty much every school and award form my Reserve time was missing. Plus they had to add credit to my time in service for all the times I was on active duty as a reservist.

There isn't enough room on a DD-214 for all my exploits. It ain't easy accumulating all these pieces of flair!

I had an interesting experience last week.  A friend of mine called me while on his way to Wyoming to attend the funeral of his daughters boyfriend.  It seems the guy was drinking with his cousin and they had an argument so the cousin went into his bedroom got a rifle and shot the guy killing him.  The boyfriend was 18X who had been in since 2005. He had served with the 5th SF on active duty and then with the 19th SF as a reservist.

My friend said he was told that the guy had a bunch of awards that were not on his DD214 because they were classified, and that he had been on several operations that could not be listed on the DD214 because they were also classified.

I corrected him on the award business, and since the SF laison had written his eulogy, it sounded like the guy had single handedly won the Iraq and Afghan wars. I told my friend that from what saw I regarding awards listed in the write up he had been an okay soldier, but when I had met the guy years ago he seemed like the standard 18X bullshitter all about secret squirrel stuff.  A legend in his own mind.  He even claimed that the SF would moniter his emails to make sure he didn't reveal any classified stuff.  All he needed was some hair gel and he could have passed for being a navy seal.

Like Don Shipley told me years ago during a discussion about fakes, "There are no classified dd214s, there are only classified operations"

18X is only prior to the Q course. It's really more of a program and not an MOS you can work in. Once you're in the Q course, you are selected for an actual  18 series MOS. Might be a mistake, might be some BS someone was shoveling.

OER’s can be classified. I have personal experience in that matter. 214”s haven’t seen one but I could believe some data might be blacked out or redacted if it shouldn’t have been on the form in the first place.

That reminds me of a time when a guy told me he was an 18C - interrogation specialist . And yes I called him out on that one real quick.

18X is kind of like the MOS designation they use to give every one in basic that was going split option. I forget the MOS designation now.

I think the old smaj was derogatorily referring to the guy as an “18x” to slam the SF direct enlistment idea. SF guys previously had to be selected out of other MOSs.

The guy was a qualified Special Forces soldier, I just couldn't remember what MOS series he was (most likely 18B) so I just called him a 18X. As I said in the original post he served with the 5th on active duty and then in the 19th.  His listed awards included the special forces tab. The thing I found interesting about the situation was the stories they were telling his girlfriend about his service and awards. Same old stuff I have heard over the years since the 70's.  No disrespect to the man, it was the people talking to my friend that started the stories he asked me about.

Here is the guys obit

Dig it. The obit says he was 18B (Weapons Sergeant).

I've heard stories of some guys that built some pretty elaborate grifts to back up their fake SOF careers. Just wanted to make sure you hadn't run into such a guy. I actually ran into a cat at a VFW function years ago that claimed service in a Ranger Batt... 3rd Batt, Alcatraz (A Co.)... when I served. I let him talk about all of the "high speed" shit he had done while I pulled a couple of buddies (also vets) into the conversation. We called him out. Not only was it one of the LEAST active periods in our company's history, that dude wasn't there ( just after Just Cause). It was so slow everyone was putting in 4187s for every school under the sun. Hell, the 75th wasn't even a JSOC asset in those days. Not sure what the dude ACTUALLY  did, but he wasn't who he said he was. His VFW post bought it though.

Just making sure this wasn't that or something similar.

What is interesting to me is that it really doesn't matter what kind of high speed, low drag, steely-eyed killer with multiple combat tours you might be, if someone decides to end you by walking into the room and shooting you, you will end up dead.  Just like the american sniper guy and this guy.

Hunting people is a lot like hunting deer, you will either have time to set up an ambush and wait for them to come to you, or you will have little  time to respond when they suprise you by showing up all of a sudden.

Talk about unicorns...  I knew a SEAL who was a ship CO, that was another unicorn -- CO of a ship walking around with a Trident on his uniform.  Also worked for two USAF academy graduates who both commissioned in the Navy, went to BUD/S together, and both made it to O-7 as SEALs.  They were CO and XO of the same command when I worked for them.

Then there's Jonny Kim, SEAL, Harvard medical school graduate Doctor, Naval Aviator, and Astronaut.

The only unicorns I saw was a couple of Chief Warrant Officer 5's. The one I met in 1991 and I think he might have originally enlisted during the Korean War, the man was ancient.
