Photo contest coming up, trying to decide which ones to submit.
So, ARF, here's your big chance! In category Virginia Fauna, I've narrowed it down to these two. Which would you choose? Eagle or heron? Bald Eagle_Fauna by FredMan, on Flickr Great Blue Heron_Fauna\ by FredMan, on Flickr |

While I like the eagle and its reflection for composition, the heron is the sharper, better focused image.

As much as I like the eagle with reflection, I prefer the sharpness of the heron. Both are great, as we have come to expect from you.
I definitely prefer the Heron because of how clean & sharp it is,.. but the eagle would be the preference of most I think.

Gotta agree with everyone else so far.

If the eagle was closer so you could see a very sharp eye I'd pick that one. As with most wildlife shots the sharp eye is what draws one to the object of the photo.
So for that reason I have to go with the heron. But I do like the eagle, however to me it's just not up to front page standards. And boy do I wish the heron was holding a fish or frog. |
I really like that eagle photo.
The correct answer is: enter both!
Neither. You asked. Art is of course in the eye of the beholder.
Boring, plain, overused profile pictures with nothing interesting. Nothing that has not been done 87m times. Subject matter display ..matters ! IMO. |
Do you have the heron with its mouth closed? Those things are noisy.
If the eagle pic had a better background, I’d favor it. But it doesn’t so the heron is the better shot. |
gonna go with the majority and say the heron. I like both pics but the heron is just a crisper sharper image to me.
Alright. Heron it is.
Was really leaning that way anyway, but the composition of the eagle just made me pause. |

Got anohter decision to make:
Category New Forests. I really really like the second one more, but it's a hair soft at the top of the seedling. Tomorrow's Timber_New Forests in Virginia by FredMan, on Flickr Nurse Log_New Forests by FredMan, on Flickr Which one?? |

I like the second one for composition as well. You're right a bit soft on the top.
I don't know the rules for the contest but if allowed did you try running it through a No noise module. I ask because I copied the photo which is a jpg and ran it through On1 no-noise. The top became A LOT sharper, to the point where the needle tips are sharp and clear. I didn't post the resulting photo because it's your work and I just tried the process to see what would happen without your permission. I also deleted the original and processed one. EBR |

I like the second one better.

I ran the nurse log seedling through LR Enhance and upped the resolution. This was shot with a Nikon Coolpix AW100, and native resolution is 2592x1944.
LR Enhance let me bump that up to 5184x3633, and then I ran that through some more sharpening and denoise. Nurse Log_New Forests Final by FredMan, on Flickr |

Nice. MUCH better. That's a winner in my eyes. I'm viewing it on my HP laptop and it looks real good. I'll view it on my iMac post process unit later. I'll bet it looks fantastic on that one.

ARGGHHHHH!
Juts got the review copy of the contest issue, and I screwed up one of my entries. I had INTENDED to submit this shot for the New Forests category Nurse Log_New Forests Final by FredMan, on Flickr This is what I actually submitted Planted Seedling by FredMan, on Flickr Which STILL won 2nd Place. Oh well, now I've got one in the bag for the next contest. |

Congrats, Still did very well. And as you said you have one in the bag for next time.
As I said in my review of the Heron, I wish it was holding a fish or frog and would have been even better if you caught it tossing it in the air to swallow. EBR |
