Cool old guns (Page 1 of 2)

What type of guns do you like to have around because they're neat?

I'm 40 and remember going to gun stores with my dad as a kid and picking up nearly every gun on the racks on the floor.

I just like working the actions and shouldering them at the heads on the walls.

I'm not that well traveled here in NH to all the shops because they're all pretty far apart but I have a feeling my son might miss out on that type of weekly expedition I had as a kid.

So I've been trying to snag a few old neat milsurps for him to mess around with when he gets older.

Got a couple m1903s recently

And a 1916 short rifle in .308

Working on my daughter too

I feel like I need a Mosin, an sks, a mauser m98, a krag, and now I kinda want a trapdoor Springfield.

What's your favorite?

Would love to have the Krag that my dad had for a deer rifle, smoothest action ever on those rifles.

I have the following:

2 SMLEs

1 1903 and 1 1903a3

1 K-98

1 MAS 36

1 M-39 Finn

1 Martini Henry

I like them all.  But the SMLE and 1903s are my favorite

MAS 36 is close behind those

My local shops used to have a bunch of cool old .22 rifles priced rather low. I bought a Glenfield Marlin semi auto, considered a few more but didn't buy anything and now everything in that category is expensive. I don't have anything bigger than 5.56 (and I should fix that) but that means buying a milsurp or other old rifle requires getting into another caliber and I can't afford that now. I'm not even really set up with what I do have.

My uncle used one for deer in the PA woods for decades. First time I cycled the action I couldn't believe how smooth it was.

Need to get a .30 carbine. Easy on the kids, and fun to shoot. & gives you an excuse to get a blackhawk in .30 carbine

For the prices they're going for now...no you don't.  Seriously.  I got an M44 20+ years ago for $45.  No WAY would I pay for that (utilitarian) POS what they're going for now.

To me it would be an old Winchester 94 30-30 and a Nylon 66 .22.

Yeah, I loved looking at the 22s as a kid since that's what I typically shot. Both my 22s are older than me I think.

One of the reason I got the 1916 short rifle in .308 was because I have a ton of it. I also shoot and load 7x57 for my ruger m77 so I guess I should get another one in that one too

I figure $89 in 2000 is close to that today.

Go for a Springfield Armory 1922 M2... a G.I. 22LR built on a 1903 action. Accurate, cheap to shoot and he'll probably have the only one on the block. Way scarcer than 1903s and 03 a3s.

What did you do in terms of the builds?
Link Posted: 4/26/2024 7:42:18 PM EDT

I have a bonch of old guns.  Lots of .22s.  New stuff mostly doesn't interest me much, except maybe Winchester model 70s and a few others.
Link Posted: 4/26/2024 7:46:04 PM EDT

I don't pay much attention to gun designs that are less than ~40 years old; "new" just doesn't interest me much. I didn't get into ARs until they had been in military service for over 40 years. Almost all of my guns are milsurps or based on old military designs. Two recent exceptions are a couple of modern polymer-framed guns that I bought (SIG & FN), to be used for CCW and as a bump-in-the-night bedside gun.

Everything. they were both rusted stripped actions. and 2 unfinished barrel blanks. We did the Color case/bluing, stock work, and chambered the barrels. Made any pieces that were missing.

I have a bunch of old milsurp rifles, but my favorite are my Garands by far.
A close second is would be my Venezuelan contract FN-49 in 7mm Mauser. A very nice rifle in a smooth shooting cartridge.
As for bolt actions, it's hard to beat an Enfield No.4 mk2.

My grandfather taught me to shoot on a Winchester 1902 single shot. That rifle is long gone, but I found another one (the only other one I have ever seen) in a local shop, so I picked it up for sentimental reasons. I've got an old E Phillips percussion rifle from the mid 1800s, and my uncle just gave me my great-great grandfather's old percussion rifle, made in the same time frame.  I can't remember the make of that one at the moment though.

I regret selling my Smelly. At the time, though, it was just my canyon rifle. That is to say, it was a loaner I paid $14 (fourteen) for, so if the loanee accidentally dropped it into a canyon, I wouldn't be arbitrarily be compelled to toss them in after it.

Garands and Mausers are never a bad choice.

Neither are lever actions, cowboy revolvers, or muzzleloaders of all description.

I like my Garand, Carbine, Mosin, and SKS.

The SKS is the most practical to shoot.. even now 7.62x39 is affordable to shoot, doesn't murder your shoulder, and can be easily found.

Nonetheless, I just picked up this cool 22lr for $125. Glenfield Marlin 75C. An old odd 22lr of your preferred flavor would fit in very nicely.

The SMLE is great fun for us, the trapdoor is too as the manual manipulation of those is neat.
I don't have a Krag but they are slick, fun rifles.
Old pump .22's are fun and can be very fast.

Almost all of my guns are rare and/or unusual. That's the reason I bought them most of the time.

I got my Swedish BAR Kg m/37 because its different than the usual BARs you see in the US and is a better gun than a US BAR. The barrel is also quick change and it is chambered in 6.5 Swede. It will be 100 years old in 2027 and still looks near new.

My ZB26 is not as rare as my Swede Kg m/37 but it a neat gun with a lot of neat features. It will be 100 in 2031.

There’s one in AZ on a local forum right now for $3k and the seller is claiming that’s a bargain.

Old Remington Model 12 punp action 22s are cool and affordable.

I have a couple of 12c versions.  They were made a long time and you can still find parts for them also.

I had friends younger kids prefer them to the ARs in 22lr, 10/22s, and a Walther MP5 22 clones, etc

Couldn't agree more. Remington Mod 12, Winchester 1890, 1906, 62, 61, are outstanding. Extremely well built, and accurate. I love the Winchester's ability to slam fire.
