First time turned on since winter

No water.

Main water solenoid is humming. Took it out, connected to 12 volt battery. Worked perfect, more than eager

Put back in ground and it hums, but isn’t letting water get to the rest of the unit

These solenoids have failed every single year I’ve lived here. Replace them every spring, it’s getting annoying.

Mine have a manual on/off .  Right on the sov. Yours doesn’t?

Something else is going on if you are smoking SOVs that much.
I have 6 of them and put this system in 25 years ago. One bad one so far.

if you burn out the solioids every year, might start looking at a new controler instead of replacing them every year. or at the very least a new power supply.

The changes in your test include a different power supply.

Check your installed power.

They work fine throughout the summer. The issue is the first use after winter. Of course I have the lines blown out before it gets cold, but something about sitting in the closed position for 6 months kills them

They also look super rusty. The plunger still functions, but the part where it touches the water gets extremely stained

It’s been years since I worked irrigation. A common problem on start up is debris in the valves. Simply remove the screws on top of the valves, take off the top, remove and inspect the diaphragm, and look for small rocks that might be in there. Hope that helps

Can you manually cycle the diaphragms by turning the solenoids?

If you winterize the system, why not pull the solenoids too?

Yes I can manually cycle. I suppose I can pull the solenoids every fall but that’s a major PITA with rewiring

I have a septic tank and drain field, although the rest of the lawn is looking a bit parched right now, as we are in the tail end of the dry season.

What brand solenoid? Perform a milliamp test

My guess us your control wire, which also includes power has a break/water intrusion somewhere. The freeze thaw exposes it. Burns them up every year.

Not an irrigation guy.

If you have a rain gauge, check to see if it's still functional.

OP did you have your lawn recently aerated also? i had an issue where some lines got punctured when some wasn't buried deep enough or marked correctly.

Do you have a pic of your setup? The solenoids on mine (Rainbird) unscrew and it will manually water. When I have an issue I take apart the diaphragm housing, clean it and re-install. But I don't know what you have.

Shop vac works well to clean the valve body , some Rainbird controllers will diagnose a bad solenoid .

I never install a master valve but always install an inline strainer before the backflow preventer.

As already mentioned, my guess is electrical issues .
