When commenting on a subject, does actual experience on the subject matter? Or can you be become just as knowledgeable by reading up on the subject or watching videos?

@Marie stopped giving GD free consultation on importing/exporting because her experience was being drowned out by loud people with an opinion.

Almost everything I read an article or watch a video on a subject that I am a subject matter expert on, something is incorrect.

If this happens often in my subject areas, I have to assume it happens in all areas.

Depends on the subject and the role.

A guy driving a gravel truck has been involved in building bridges for decades and dumped gravel at thousands of bridge construction sites and has a ton of experience.  He can also run a bulldozer like a champ.  But he does not know shit about building/designing a bridge.

A guy with a B.S. in engineering with a dual Ph.D. In applied physics and materials science has been to and investigated every modern bridge failure.  And knows all available details about major bridge failures historically.  He has consulted on thousands of bridge designs over the past few decades.  But he has never been on site from start to finish in charge of a project.  He knows nothing of that.

Another guy is an MSCE and been on site for dozens of  constructions over the past few decades.  He’s likely a journeyman at driving a big gravel truck or running a bulldozer.  He probably only knows a tenth as much of pure data as the Ph.D.

I read alot, I'm pretty knowledgeable in many areas.
I'm better in the areas of things I've done repeatedly for years.

Doctors, lawyers, cops, army generals, Special Operations commandos, politicians, cooks, teachers, farmers, physicists and weather forecasters have all repeatedly been shown to be wilting flowers in the face of weaponized autism.

Aviation threads are always fun

In the last farming thread, an actual farmer didn’t comment until the 4th page. Every other post was prefaced with “my daddy was a farmer” or “all the farmers in my area.”

It depends on what the subject is. The more technical it is ie, flying a plane, surgery, the more real experience you're going to need if you're commenting on specific details.
But broad topics with obvious conclusions are a lot easier to be knowledgeable on. I've never been shot, but I know it would hurt or kill me, and I'm confident enough in that conclusion to tell others not to point guns at people you don't want to hurt or kill.

This is my experience.

Anything I'm trying to learn, I make effort to do as much cross referencing as possible and preferably from people actually owning first hand experience.

This is GD, everyone is an expert in everything.

If you want to see some examples, look at any maritime thread, especially the Baltimore bridge thread.  There are a handful of us here who actually work in the industry and have tried to answer questions or share information but you will quickly be shouted down by those who know more because they read it somewhere or because some YouTube personality told them different.

I read the threads for humor but try really hard to not respond anymore.

That's really up to the consumer of the comments to filter out. Anyone can (and does) comment
on subjects, you gotta figure out who's full of shit.

I will say that here and IRL the "We've always done it that way" expert can be as much a hindrance
as the "internet expert".

I've run into guys with decades in their trade who can't figure small things out as well as newbies
who can find a new andd better solution. You have to filter them out.

I personally try to add "read it somewhere" or "I've done this" when I comment on something.

IMO -- take everything into account

experienced pilots crash -- world-class surgeons make mistakes, etc

conversely - sometimes the 'new guy' has a fresh / correct perspective (except MBAs -- all MBAs suck...)

so -- does experience matter ?  yes.  but you CAN get lulled into deferring to the 'old-timer' when the correct COA might be something different

wisdom is to know the difference

I have met many of people who have done and know much more than the book read individual.

But….. I have seen just as many do a job and not have the slightest clue of why or how.

An expert knows how to do and why.

Both is what it takes to make a professional

Both matter, but what matters more is intelligence to understand the subject.

I've met plenty of people who have done a job for years and still have zero understanding beyond the specific steps they do. Ask them why they do X, they have no clue other than that is what they were trained to do.

I've also met people who have an excellent understanding of a subject despite never doing it themselves.

The former were people with little intelligence and curiosity, the latter were smart people who were thinkers.

I learned it with the last two switched.  First, you're competent but have to think about it.  Then you're competent without thinking about it.

It's impossible to know that without first having the experience.

Experience matters, but it is not immunity from an appeal to authority fallacy.

You can have experience and still be wrong.

I've had people here tell me flat out I was ignorant about a subject that just happens to be what I do every single day for a living, with their only experience being "I had it done once and it failed". I tried to explain why it failed, based on their description of the failure, and they told me I didn't have any idea what I was talking about.

I just shut up and went on about my day

Was it Ike who said something along the lines as there is no substitute for military training like actual combat?

You have to do the book learning so when it comes time in your experience to face that issue you have "tools" from your book learning to use. In my military career I was ever so happy to face something that I had been trained upon but as reality would have it those times rarely came.

Experience can't be taught but is a hell of a good teacher.

In my line of work experience couldn't keep up with the changes and I needed outside education and training to supplement even a 14-hour, 7 day a week schedule like the Navy uses. There was no substitute for formal training on the gear but broad experience often applies across many areas of need. My former boss was a brilliant man who spawned a technical renaissance by investing in advanced training for military broadcasters.

Gotta have thicker skin than that man.

I get called a Democrat, communist, Biden supporter, whiner, oh that I was on the wrong forum… you name it, I’ve been called it, regarding oil threads.

This is the internet. Don’t take it seriously, don’t take yourself too seriously.  The internet is for people to come to bitch and whine. Just laugh at them, if they continue, fuck with them.
