It is really obvious when guys do that and it usually looks pretty cheesy. Not quite as bad as wearing a rug but definitely in the same vein. The only one you're fooling is yourself.

Don't use hair dye. Doesn't play well with beard hair. JFM Beard and Moustache is probably your best, easiest to find choice, every drug store and supermarket carries it.

I always wondered why they dyed their beards red when it was so obvious they did and no one (or very few had red hair naturally), just never bothered to google it.

Well, seeing this post I finally did.
