I Built A Big Gun (Page 1 of 2)

Page / 2
Posted: 4/24/2024 10:30:21 AM EDT
A few Years back I had this idea of building a stupid large AR-10, specifically the largest Ar-10 in existence. Slowly but surely I acquired the parts and turned the idea on paper into a reality. I give you the 547 Ronin. This is a cut and necked down 505 gibbs case that fires a .550 caliber bullet. I still have some modifications I would like to do but mechanically its ready to fire. My schedule is pretty busy so it might be a few weeks before I can get it out to the range BUT theoretically (quickload) says it will fire a 600gr. bullet at 2000ft/sec at a cap of 45k psi.  I think thats a bit optimistic considering the case volume but I would be more than happy with 1900ft/sec. It might be a little slow for Africa but for the Wisconsin northwoods it should be more than adequate.

Build list:
.550 Cal Pencil PacNor barrel 1-16 twist with carbine gas length
KAK magnum BCG
Double Star Receiver set
Heavy KAK buffer
Apex Gator Grip handguard
Blackwood Trading 'tommy gun' grips
Ace rifle length stock

.550 600 grain next to a 350gr 458 cal bullet

L to R: 300Blk, 375 SOCOM, 547 Ronin, 450NE

Those pesky critters always go to the opposite side of the tree when I hunt them. Simple remedy is to get something big enough to take down the tree.

Neat!
What kind of powder /primer?
Home made dies, or farmed out?

That would completely aerosolize a squirrel.

I approve, OP!

Agree.

This is not a pearl clutching question, but just curious: is that a DD?

Freaking awesome, OP.

I am both disgusted and aroused by those Tommy Gun grips on that gun.

Yes it is. I applied for a sporting cartridge exemption but was denied. A bolt action would not need a DD

Outstanding!

I love the concept of big-bore AR10's.

My ambitions are much more modest than yours...
I'm dreaming of a 284 based wildcat, necked up to 416.

The fatter case of the 284 should allow for a shoulder to headspace on,
while it's rebated rim uses the standard 308 bolt.

Not sure if it will double stack inside a mag, though, but I would be happy with even 8-10 rounds of 416/284.

The thought of 800gr subs has crossed my mind but I cringe to think how much a custom suppressor would cost

Are you gonna neck it down to .470 and launch 500 grain bullets at 2150 fps?
Link Posted: 4/24/2024 11:46:34 AM EDT
[#18]
That's awesome

I'd be trying to see how big of a slug I could stuff in and drive 900 fps

Curious as DDs are one are of NFA rules I have zero experience in, but if it's a "destructive device" does that mean it's not a rifle, shotgun or pistol?  Therefore barrel length and overall length are irrelevant?

I bet a case load of trail boss and the 800gr bullets would be subsonic. Trouble is, you probably would not have enough pressure to cycle the action.

Why wouldn't a Bolt action need it? I assume it's a DD because it's got a bore bigger than .500?

How much powder are you burning? Any of the cans that are built for 50 Beowulf would probably work. You might also see about getting one of the cans designed for 45/70 and the like bored to .510" for this.

Seems like a thumper, but you're not burning 100gr of powder to get that big slug moving, and gas volume/pressure seems to be the limiting factor in using non-traditional calibers in suppressors. For instance, using 300BO subs in a 9mm can.

If a cartridge is greater then .510 you can apply to the ATF for a sporting cartridge exemption which allows you to build said rifle without having to form 1 it. This is how things like 600NE 585 Nyati's are legal to build but only applies to single shots, bolt actions, or double rifles. It is the ATF's opinion that any semi auto's are the devil and have to be DD's regardless of configuration.

Because the ATF has decided they are the sole decider on what’s “Sporting” and what’s not. They get to decide.

A .50bmg would be splendid and those are maybe $2k on the low end - all you need is a drill bit.

Awesome! Reminds me of the From Hell rifles and a guy on youtube who converted a Winchester lever action shotgun to a rifle.

.458 Win Mag AR10's are a thing, as well as magnum length AR's in .300WM fwiw.

How about 700BMG? 50BMG brass cut off and sized to .700. That shit is wild.

There was another small outfit making big bore cans. I can't recall the name at the moment.
