I am a fan of that antique caliber family, .38S&W, .38spl & .357 Magnum. I have alway fancied one day having a lever gun to go with my chief's specials, my model 10, and my 686.
Henry sells a 16" carbine (7rds) and a 20" rifle (10rds). Ballistics by the Inch seems to show that 16" is the sweet spot with velocity dropping off in longer barrels.

My first question is: Will I die if I only have 7 .357 rounds on tap?

My second is: Will I die if I have a non- rimfire Henry?

My 3rd question is: Does anyone have any thing they want to offer as far as advice?

Marlin or Winchester if you can afford it, Uberti 1873 is worth a look.

I’ve fallen back in love .38/.357. Been reloading a lot of it and shoot 1000 plus a month. Mostly thru my Python.

You will not die. The .357 will get the job done.

One of my first centerfire guns was a Rossi carbine in .38/.357 in 1988ish.  Learned to reload .38/.357.  Sold it to fund other things.  Regretted it ever since, and haven't come full circle yet, but probably will buy one again someday.  .357 in a rifle tube is nothing to sneeze at.

I watched too many John Wayne movies a few years back and decided I had to have a pistol cartridge lever gun.  I decided on a 16" .357 Rossi Model 92.  I bought mine used off of GB, and it's old enough that it does not have the safety.  Unfortunately, I have only taken it out shooting once.  On my single range trip, it was a blast to shoot and I thought it was extremely accurate for an open sighted 16" pistol cartridge iron.  With my limited experrience, I am very happy with it.

A few random thoughts: some of the 92's specifically warn not to shoot .38 Specials in them.  I've only tried .357 Mags in mine and it ate everything.  My dad has a Henry .357 and my BIL has a Henry .44, and they both seem like solide irons as well, I just wanted the nostalgia of a 92.

Depends on how much your want to spend, but work a Henry's action before deciding.

357 is cheap to shoot and relaxing since it feels so anemic in a rifle.  38spl is cheap and often subsonic in a rifle if you have a silencer.
Multiple guns in the same caliber is handy and 357 will kill the hell out of some paper targets.

But 44 is always better than 357 in a rifle.
I just sold my last 357 rifle this week in the EE, only have 44 and 45 now.

I have a Henry rifle length. It’s what the shop had when I got the urge. I wish I had the carbine but I’m never going to be on horseback or actually carrying it so for the range it’s fine. The most it will see is range and maybe a cabin gun when I’m at our land but more for the nostalgia than anything. But I enjoy the Henry. I did just handle the marlin 94. Sweet rifle too. I’d personally go with one of those.

I've yet to put my hands on one yet. I have a .22 Henry that I like very much. Full Colibri plinker out my home office window.

I'll have to look at other makers but I'm liking 16" the more I think about it.

Sadly I'm in Commiefornia so treading a barrel for a quite gun makes no sense.

The "switch between 38 and 357," is bullshit.  Point of impact changes are so large, it involves a complete resight...use it as a 38.  Or use it as a 357..  one or the other

357 bullets are designed for revolver length barrels.  Driven to carbine speeds, they over expand and fail.  Especially 125s.  Stick to 158s.  Your best bet is often a 158 SOFT point

If you handload, you can use Lilgun and get a 158 to 1950 fps.  That's original 30 WCF load power levels.  Work very well on deer to about 125 yards

I was planning on getting my Henry X 44mag barrel cut down like that soon. I have always hated the look of the gun with the barrel sticking out so far past the mag tube. Your picture just convinces me I’m right.

I have a Henry Yellow Boy rifle in .38/.357.  It's great fun.  I will be shooting it with open sights in a steel match in the morning.  It will be my third time.

.38 is so very easy to reload.  I don't have many .357 cases.  I load .38 cases using .357 load data and set the projo just a little bit shallower than a .38.

Never any feeding problems.  Do not shoot standard load .38s.  It feels like a .22 and what fun is that?

I agree with this but having some way to effectively fire 38spcl which is so common is why I have my .357 Marlin and won't
get rid of it. I also have a 30-30 for this same reason, these common calibers will turn up in a SHTF scenario.

Makes me sad that “Henry’ has somehow become the “go to” lever gun.

I’ve owned two Henry’s.  I no longer own any and frankly I’m still salty I lost money on them after discovering there are better lever actions out there.

Having owned over 40 lever guns I can tell you that if 38 is what you want I’d go with the JMB designed 1892.  Your choice of manufacturers from Rossi up to Miroku Winchester clones (I’d recommend an Italian made one.)

My second choice would be a slicked up 1873 from an Italian manufacturer.

I should be glad that everyone overlooks the Italian guns, keeps their prices down and Henrys cost up.  That’s fine now that I know better.

Not to say Henry”s aren’t perfectly good guns (actually their rimfires are way too cheaply made for my taste).  It’s just that once you’ve held and ran an 1873 or 1892 made by a premium manufacturer it’ll be hard to justify the price of a Henry.

Ask the SASS (cowboy shooters) what they’d recommend (they actually run thousands of rounds and heavily use their guns) and they’ll actually specifically recommend against a Henry….theyre first recommendation is the 1873 followed by a 92 or Marlin.

The 1873 has a ton of aftermarket upgrades to make it “go fast.”  But my son’s Rossi 92 “Space gun” is slicker than my short stroked Cimarron 73.

I have a Rossi 16" .357 that I deer hunt with. Light, easy to carry, and accurate out to 150 yards for me. Where I hunt, I rarely get a shot over 75 yards anyway and is deadly on deer. My next purchase will be the Henry carbine in steel.

16" is not the sweet spot.  I use a Winchester 1892 in 357 mag for just about everything.   With handloads or boutique loads (buffalo bore, underwood, double tap) you can take advantage of the extra barrel length.   I can hit 2400fps with the 140 grain xtps without any pressure issues and that gives me almost 1600ft lbs of energy.   It also holds 13 rounds.   Personally I like the Henry rifles better as they are less finicky aboht bullet profiles.  Every winchesrer, pistol cal, has had a very short ane tight chamber....44s, 45 colts, 357s...all of them.   I usually have to use a finish reamer to correct it.  That being said, they are more accurste than the Henrys however the Henrys are easy to mount optics on.   I had to drill and tap the winchesters

Some flaws in this, you might have been right on bullet tech 30+yrs ago.  There'd several 125jhp that are made specifically for rifle velocity.  I've found Hornady xtp 125gr rifle jhp work real well at 2150, as tested on a stray pit at 95yds.

Fwiw my .44 Henry only fit 7 rounds initially but after a few tubes 8 rounds fit just fine.
Very happy with the rifle and have only seen two issues-
-the mlok slot (X model) isn't parallel with the barrel, have seen this on other guns, I have an RPP handguard I need to install so this won't affect me
-the back of the hammer very slightly contacts the tang directly behind the cutout

As per Lucky Gunner 180 grain Remington SPs are doing over 2000fps out of this rifle. 😮 I went with .44 since I have nothing in .357, .44 or .45. I passed on .45-70 because of shoulder injuries and .44 is a better SD round than .45-70. The plan was to have a Cali legal rifle for visiting family there and also have a camp gun for truck camping. I've flown with it a few times but the Great Camping Adventure thing never took off. 300 grain hard cast isn't the worst bear gun and it's a little handier for SD use than heavy .45-70 or slugs.

Get one that's threaded. 158 38 specials are quieter then my pellet gun.

I also recommend the xs sight rail system if you get the x model. Whenever you can find it in stock.
