I change my oil every 6000 miles and now a new oil filter for my car is $10. Can I reuse it and push it to 12k miles before getting another one?

oil filters are cheap.

new engines are not.

change the filter.

Skip the starbucks (just for one day) and buy a new filter.

Whole lot of things I would cut out of my life before trying to reuse a $10 oil filter.

On a modern car that’s designed to go 10k miles between changes, sure, you’d probably be fine. But I ignore the manufacturer’s 10k miles regardless and change every 5k still, because oil/filter changes are cheap enough relative to the cost of our vehicles.

Reuse or only change it every other time?

I have skipped changing the filter before when using full synthetic and changing the oil at 3k.

Honda says to change the filter every other oil change on our 2019.
I pay extra to have it changed every time, but I'm not sure they actually do it.

Put a mark on it with a sharpie, see if it's still there when you get it back.

Wait for a napa $5 filter day and stock up? Hell, once I pay for $50 in oil a $10 filter isn't bad for my car. Costs me $60 to do myself.

It's ten dollars... That being said I've just drained oil and added fresh with no issues.  On fleet vehicles not on my own.

Real men only change oil every 60k miles.

Engines can be replaced, but we only have one planet.

Why do you hate Mother Earth so much?

Seriously change the filter

Why change the thing that filters all the crap out of your oil???

Seriously, do you want to reuse toilet paper too?

Price an engine ..... then change the filter.

That will depend on your filter, driving, and conditions.

You might be able to push it that far if your gasoline is good, your engine is efficient, your oil is very good, and your filter is high quality. At the $10 pricepoint it's unlikely you are getting one of the high quality filters with synthetic media, lots of capacity, and 20 micron filtration.

But if you think oil filters are expensive, try pricing a new engine or a new car.

Replacing the filter every change is such a cheap thing to do in the long run that it's a "why wouldn't you?" type thing.

GD...oil and filters are too expensive
Also GD...you gotta change oil every 87 feet.  Any more that that will cause your engine to kaboom.

How about doing 10000 mile oil and filter changes, you know, like the manufacturer recommends.

No thanks.

The manufacturer said all kinds of stupid shit, like transmission fluid was "lifetime" and so was differential fluid, until they backtracked.

Lawnmowers now exist in which the manufacturer says the oil never needs to be changed.  Ever.  If you wanted to keep something as long as possible, do you think that makes a lot of sense?

I would change just the filter and go longer on the oil interval if anything.

Oil analysis tells us that most oils last
A long time. Filters not so much.

My last truck I did 4k filter and 8k oil and filter.

Sold It with 300k still Running perfect two years ago. 2011 ford ecoboost. Kid is still driving it.

Bingo.

Nobody reads the asterisk on service interval recommendations from the manufacturers.
