I have a carport, but it didn't help too much a couple of years ago when hail came in sideways and beat up the rear of my last car.

Comforters from the thrift store.
Layer of 6" foam on the roof, hood, and trunk.
Another later of comforters.
Tarp for water proofedness

There's also this thing called "insurance" which is highly recommended.

I keep a moving blanket I toss over the roof. May not be enough in heavy hail but hope enough to keep the panoramic roof from shattering.

Ive protected a couple outdoor cars by strapping a tarp around them with big styrofoam blocks underneath. Basically a hail trampoline.

I just had a Facebook ad Pop up in my feed. Basically a big inflatable bubble for your car. They advertised dropping a hammer, bricks, and such and them bouncing off.

Guy down the street from me has these on his cars. I asked him of they work and he said he got through a few hail storms before he had to replace them. They are on his car A LOT in spring, at the slightest risk of hail. At least 10 houses in my neighborhood use them.

Better than getting the car totaled.

Much would depend on the size of the hail.  Softball sized hail would ruin just about any car cover I can think of.

I have fixed hail dents in cars that were in a garage. One broke the sky light and dented the roof, the other broke a window and dented the side.

There is nothing 100% effective, all you can do increase your odds of less damage.

Get a mesh material for the sides of the carport. Seems easier is you ha e a structure already in place.

That's what I was thinking. 3m has some pretty thick film. It protects from stone chips & the little dents they can leave

Exactly. Have the hood, roof, and trunk lid done in their thickest PPF. Won’t be cheap, but PPF tech is wayyyy ahead of where it was. It will last for years.

Option two would be a “cheap” bare-bones steel/aluminum car port.

We had a hail storm blow through the next town over when I was a kid.  Garages didn't help.  Local pastor had a grand piano in his living room.  It got destroyed.  I went out to help clean up after it passed. The hail was still on the ground, I don't recall seeing a single piece smaller than a golf ball.  Several ranchers lost a lot of cattle that day.

I’d imagine a thick memory foam king size mattress pad or two from Costco would do a pretty good job if needed on short notice

It won't stop the panel from denting, it'll make it harder for a pdr guy to fix to though.
