The movie takes place on "12 May Thursday" in 1984 but May 12 was not a Thursday in 1984.

I finished high school, worked at Mickey D’s making egg McMuffins on the breakfast shift over the summer, then left for boot camp. The training then was all about countering the Soviet threat, but Red Dawn never happened. Never thought I would end up in the Arabian desert six years later instead of fighting the Russians.
Red Dawn and Terminator are still two of my favorite ‘80s movies, but there were so many good movies that decade. |

I lived in Orlando with my mom, brother, sister and grandparents. They had a house on a canal off a large lake. I was fishing in their backyard almost every day. At night we would put out a Catfish line and run the fishing pole up to the black sliding glass door and wait for it to rattle against the aluminum frame. We caught a Catfish almost every night. Sometimes a turtle. Then clean the Catfish the next morning. Grandma was so much fun. I was 12 years old going on 13. It is one of my best memories of her.

That was a very hard year for me. Anyway, George Orwell's 1984 just came about a few decades late. Think about it.

Ended my freshman year in June.
Started 10th grade in August. I'm pretty sure I lost my virginity that summer. Good times. We could leave the house at 9:00 in the morning, and not come back until dinner time. No one said a word, as long as our chores were done. |

Mine is in September in Ohio. Sidenote....out of ~200 classmates I graduated with, the number that have died from drug overdoses is insane. I need to run back through my list but it's somewhere in the neighborhood of 15% of the class. |

In all honesty, those really are the absolute best ever filmed. I mean just wow. I rewatched that movie last year, and when that came up, I was like "Holy shit - those are spectacular!" And yes, I'd give almost anything to go back to 1984 |

I was finishing up my undergrad on the GI bill. Driving a '67 Chevelle SS396 and had a stack of nice job offers.
If I could send a letter to myself I would have told me to start making & registering drop-in auto sears as fast as I could do the paperwork. Then hold them in a safe deposit box for no sooner than 40 years. Alternatively, M-240 right side plates would be a good investment too. |

I got the wife pregnant in 1984. Our first one was born in April 1985. We had just bought our house for $49,500. Our interest rate was 11%. We were just barely getting by. It didn't get any better by 1985 and I rejoined the National Guard so I could earn an extra $104 a month, plus whatever overtime I was doing.
The 1980's were some tough years. Sorry, but I don't want to go back. kwg |

I was shittin' in diapers, mom was pregnant with my brother and dad was moving from Devens to Lewis before we moved to Berlin. I wish I could remember anything before '88.
