The best time of year to be living in Louisville. The city is being cleaned up and a cool reminder of being at 148 when the most amazing underdog sporting event in recent history took place.

I am very close, Winkler. So things get sporty here, but I do walk to Churchill Downs.

And I agree with 2nd post: Mint Julips! I need to stock up on regular Woodford and mint this weekend.

Had a pretty good time in the infield at 128, drinking mint juleps and tossing beads at drunk college girls.

I believe derby is limited to 3 y.o. Thoroughbreds.

I'm not a horse guy, but I enjoy watching the Triple Crown races,
especially the Kentucky Derby.

I used to go to the Derby Eve Jams back in the day when the boomer bands were still young.

it's pretty awesome

I have never been inside Churchill Downs and have about zero interest in seeing the horse race, but the lead up to derby is fun.

hot air balloon race was yesterday, parade today I think.  Next week is the paddle boat race.  Tons of stuff

Block parties downtown for a week.
Indiana vs ky paddle boats were fun.

I went on a party cruise on one .  A local band I think Firehouse was playing.  It was 15.00 bucks for the 2 hr ride up river, 1hr down for the trip. And drinks included.

My whole life revolved around horse racing. Some were stupid as shit, some were smart.....those were the one's one had to watch out for. $$$ disappearing down a rat hole.

Horse racing is slowly dying, the land the track sits on is worth more than the track, and horses are incredibly expensive to put on the track.

Mint Julip? Someone gave me one, took one sip and dumped it in the bush. Kept the fancy Derby glass.

I went to the Downs while visiting Kentucky for a conference a few years back. I've wanted to go for the Derby ever since.
I recently mentioned to my girlfriend how much I'd like to go. Her response was to look up tickets and airfare and say "that isn't too bad, especially if we make a week out of it."

I'm going to marry this one.

No, we will not be there this year.

Woodford Reserve is (I’m sure already did) bottling 150 bottles of bourbon in honor of the 150th running. When we took a tour of the distillery, we were told to expect $15k per bottle.

Pimlico racetrack(The Preakness) is also in a very bad area.
They try to avoid showing the neighborhoods when the race is run, but some still sneaks through.
The city will be trimming the grass and trees and picking up trash around the track in the next week or so.
Then nothing will be done in that area until next year.

The party scene on the infield was nuts back in the late 70s.

There was a guy there with a refrigerator shipping box with a door cut out.

He was charging $5 to use the drywall bucket inside. There was a line waiting, and a supply
of buckets with lids open and sealed stacked behind it.

Baltimore has had its own ways and expectations for quite awhile

With all the horses entered, it's more like the Kentucky Stampede. All of them are pretty good or they wouldn't be there.

Wanna meet the owners/trainers? Bars/restaurants in Midway KY after the race.

A least the updated lyrics successfully incorporate the evolved meaning of the last word there.

fucking traffic on Versailles road is even more retarded, while the races are going, not to mention the rest of the area goes "full retard" even moreso than when UK is playing a home game. only redeeming factor is the female scenery gets improved, temporarily.

I've been to a few of them.  That whole weekend is about as much fun as a man can have.  I know Arfcom hates anywhere with a population over 10 but Louisville is a cool city.

My former neighbor worked for a billionaire who had a place in Versailles and did a big Derby week thing.

The neighbor dreaded it because it was a 100 hour week for him making sure the rich people were happy.
