U.S. Marines flying a CH-53K King Stallion heavy-lift helicopter transported an F-35C Lightning II airframe from the F-35 Integrated Test Force at Patuxent River (Pax ITF) to a Navy unit located at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, New Jersey, April 24.
A Marine aviator from Marine Test and Evaluation Squadron 1 (VMX-1) piloted the most powerful helicopter in the Department of Defense that carried the inoperable airframe, which was without mission and propulsion systems, outer wings, or additional equipment, to the Prototype, Manufacturing and Test (PMT) Department of the Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division (NAWCAD) Lakehurst for use in future emergency recovery systems testing.

Wtf, that’s not a short flight.  Used to do it in a Navaho all the time, which is probably faster than a CH-53 slinging an F-35.
Amazing pic.

Would that count as three mishaps or one?

If I could snap my fingers and make it happen I think 53K pilot would be a good time.

Meh..53 has enough power these days.

Back in the day, flying at stall speeds and having to nose down once the shitter plugged with 2 Humvee's slung...that was flying

They're not.  The refueling hoses come out of the wings not a single one out the tail.   They can actually refuel two 53s at a time.

Yup, but we also have the stones to take the risks and do shit like this in training so we know if we can actually do it, or more, when it counts.

It would be neat to have a thread where everyone posts their t-shirts, glasses, coins, patches, etc. from all the stuff they've worked on. But it would probably be a social engineering gold mine. Not to mention, I cleared out my cubicle a couple years ago and don't know where most of my stuff is.

Anyway, cool thread!

When RAFM had finished beating the F-4 ABDR (aircraft battle damage repair) bird to death they brought in a 53 to take it out. Forty feet up, and they either dropped, or jettisoned it. It bounced...about ten feet straight up, and settled back on the gear. Pretty amazing.

We were watching the show from a bread van. I felt sorry for the old girl, she'd survived a lot and didn't deserve that.

Wonder if they got any lift off the wings. Tilt it forward and the drag increases exponentially.

Lol...I have a man-closet full of that stuff, and more in storage. Bet I'm not alone, either.

Bet there aren't many NATO AWACS beer steins floating around out there.

Nope you don’t!

Would be cooler if the CH-53 was dropping fuel to a functional F-35 and it dripped and launched off to unknown missions.

Is that AI?? Because it doesn’t look right to me.

After seeing Zitiforbreakfast post, I guess it is real. That C-130 fueler looks awful close to those rotor blades in the first picture. That’s some skills keeping the blades from smacking that big donkey dick.
