No, don't need a Mini.  Da has an IBM I threw together for him, mostly Inland parts - he's a retired accountant, figgered he needed an IBM in the house.

A very generous ARFCOMer gifted the late Fatalwishes a very nice NM M1A, I think I've managed a wood stock for it somewhere.  That's my Sinister's rifle when he wants it.

I'd like to swing a .308 Garand someday.  Sold my SKS as Fatalwishes left a thoroughly Tapco-fucked one in the safe, think I finally have enough original parts to unfuck it.

Had the idea of all the Op Rod operated American rifles in a collection - Garand, Carbine, M14/M1A, Mini - then started thinking about the other transitional semi-autos - FN 49, SKS, Gewehr 43, Ljungman/Hakim/Rasheed, the SVTs.

Leaving out the French MAS 49/56, as the French had already come to the modern conclusion that a one piece stock wasn't necessary.

I don't need a Mini, even if my 2nd set of in-laws (Fatalwishes' folks) live in a ban state, but I am intrigued by the last gasp of the American op-rod, a uniquely American 20th Century stop gap.

ETA:  How did I forget the BM-59?

The Mini is very cool, but not "spend a lot more than an AR for less accuracy with expensive mags" cool.

Which is why I've not bought one.  Have a full load of Ram Line AR-15/180/Mini-14 mags, so have the mags covered; but if you get one of the stripper clip guides and you're going to a ban state you only need a couple of 10 round mags & ammo on stripper clips.  The Mini-30 is an ersatz SKS in Washington state.

I've been interested in the 180 series, as it's lighter weight than the later Minis, but there's no stripper clip guide for it.

They made sense when they were blown out at Walmart for $400, I’d go so high and pay $600 for one. I refuse to pay the asking price for them now….

Ruger has fixed prices at the distributor level, so new ones are expensive & that drives up the prices on older ones as well.  Ain't no deals on a Ruger.

There are so many people who hate Mini-14s and hate dead Bill Ruger, you'd think used ones would be a little more available. But I guess a lot of people still like them. I know I do.

You'd think you couldn't screw up a mini garand/carbine.  Well...  I hope the new ones are better. I had one during the ban, and it just wasn't accurate.  Now if there was an excellent mag that didn't cost a fortune.

I had a Ranch years ago. Mounted a scope to it and tried to zero at 50yds. I thought the scope was loose or broken, it grouped so badly. Tried another scope and it did the same thing. I moved it along, but I really liked the handy form factor and simple gas system of the rifle. Crazy prices now though.

Okay, I need to make sure I didn't miss anything here.  Is Ruger going to be doing a Mini pistol version?  Because that would seriously throw off all of my plans for gun purchases.

No, it looks like Ruger is still selling the fuck out of all the conventional Mini-14s they are making. Demand for those would have to slack for them to go fiddling around with a pistol version.

I can't remember the last time I saw a Mini-14 in person. They have become like surplus rifles. Vanished into collections, never to be seen again until there's an estate sale.

No, it's an older wood stocked semi-auto family picture, the Mini hadn't been born yet when those were new.

Did you read the OP?  Maybe the second half of the title?

There's absolutely nothing wrong with the Mini-14, you just have to

realize that it's NOT an AR-15. It's NOT a target gun and wasn't meant to be.

Yes, I own one. It's a 181 series that I can reliably hit a 12 in steel plate at 120 yards

with and that's good enough for me.

OK, I will say there IS one thing wrong with Mini-14's. It's the price of a new one!

You can buy a stainless Mini & drop it into a stainless Samson folding stock based on the original.  Friend of mine sold his two original folders for good money & promptly replaced them w/ new guns & brand new folders, probably more accurate than the originals.

For reasons I don't understand I want a Mini something fierce but the prices they sell for now are tough to handle for a cheap ass like me.

A LGS has a 6.8 version on consignment right now but it's really expensive imo. For some reason used mini 14's are few and far between here.

Is Ruger still making the 6.8?  I think what you're seeing is Ruger making money off the ban state folks, as it is often the only new 5.56 semi-auto they can buy - or they're competing on the low end of the FightLite SCR.  Those of us with better options aren't huge buyers of the Mini anyway.

I see Minis every weekend at gun shows, but the cheapest are $800, and most sticker around $1k for used ones.  I think Ruger would make more money if they sold 20/30 round mag versions w/ threaded flash hiders for cheap in free states, & 10 round non-threaded versions in ban states for $, but the guys behind the lines would cry foul.

Ruger's making bank on their ARs in free states anyway, they have no need to sell Minis to us when they can charge for A-Team nostalgia.

I expected this to be an Aimless thread when I read the title.

Do they still make a mini 30?

Old wood stock guns need to be 30 cal.

The mini 14 is the only il awb legal 556 semi auto, so I picked one up.  I'd talked trash about them for a long time and owned one back in the late 90s that I'd scoped to make something out of it that it wasn't, lol.  I found a pre 580 ss/wood ranch rifle for 700-ish, lnib.  Added an adj gas block/strut thing, switched front sight to new style winged front sight and cut down and recrowned barrel to 16.5.  I shimmed the stock to provide a tight fit to receiver and added an aimpoint pro in a single ruger ring.  Also cut down stock to shorter lop so it felt about like an m4 at the 2nd position from collapsed, also added a pachmyar rubber pad so that it doesn't slip around when shouldered or leaned against a workbench.  Add 69gr matchking ammo it will hover around 2-2.5"@100yds.  Wolf gold is closer to 3" and m855 is 3-3.5moa.  This is down off a ruck pack and no rear support and a 2moa red dot.  2/3ipsc steel is fairly easy to hit from several positions at 300yds, even with 855.

@Aimless can buy real guns now.

Ruger still makes a Mini 30 in 7.62x39 & .300 Eldest Son.

The FN49 shipped to Venezuela in 7x57mm.

I have a blued Mini-14 Ranch, it shoots a group like a shotgun, I didn't measure it but I would guess 6-7" at least at 100 yds. If you expect accuracy, get an AR based gun.

Nice.  Sounds pretty much like what I'd do w/ one.  Wondered how to get a red dot on one w/ a stripper clip guide & wooden upper forend.  My only excuse is to have a ban state travel rifle, and feed it from stripper clips.  I've grown to appreciate that configuration more in the SKS, and can have the same in the Mini.

I definitely would like a Mini-30 with the whole Garand style top cover and rod in the front like I see many have done here.

Keep it nice and an irons only with the 5-10 round mags and stripper clips.
