I have also learned from experience that the greater part of our happiness or misery depends upon our dispositions, and not upon our circumstances. |
Interesting. Would be nice if there was some high resolution imaging fo them to compare emitted light spectrum with that of LEDs to rule out drone pranks, but why would somebody be playing with hobby drones over a .mil base, that's a big assed penalty when tracked down to source which they have the ability to do if controlled from a ground FPV or similar system.
So, none of the '5 observables' of massive speed/acceleration, trans-medium, no noise, no control surfaces, cloaking ability. Interesting orbs but not high enough quality due to phone camera limitations to really rule anything in or out other than "orb example, unknown". |

At the start the object is moving right to left showing us it's left side, we see a red light and a blinking white light. Although the white light seems a bit fast, I think it's in accordance with 14 CFR.
At 2:00 the mess with the camera setting a bit and I sorta see an outline of the craft for a second, but it's not enough to really make an identification. Whatever it is, whoever they are and whatever they are doing they appear to be obeying the law. |

Although, most reports indicate intelligence beyond "monkey see, monkey do" so it does seem implausible. |

That is obviously a drone. Most likely a home or foreign build.
If it was an adversary it wouldn’t have an anti collision light or any lights on. It is a stupid private operator, nothing more. It does highlight defensive weaknesses. |

Although, most reports indicate intelligence beyond "monkey see, monkey do" so it does seem implausible. View Quote Several interviews have mentioned they have a "playful" trickster nature, similar to Loki or Coyote legends. Jumping up to the original CAP point in the Nimitz event and popping from in front of a fighter to beside it when it tried missile lock, and a bunch of other "this is fun, you can't come close to keeping up" sorts of behavior. Mimicing aircraft lighting was also in that list for their 'scouts'. Nothing dangerous, just interactive, which puts them firmly in "intelligently controlled" zone, when combined with 60-600g maneuvers, it puts them out of any materials we know today. Another leak said that red light was a warning to not take violent action, orange is a scanning sort of beam and white allows for moving stuff, almost like a tractor beam but not the same thing. View Quote Well, that pretty much wipes standard aircraft off the map. I'm guessing they didn't find any of the civilian 2.4-5Ghz control channels, or that would have been mentioned. The base is home to F-22s and Naval docs for the small carriers. Were they doing any missions in Israel or Ukraine in this timeframe? "The installation first observed UAS [uncrewed aerial systems] activities the evening of December 6 [2023] and experienced multiple incursions throughout the month of December. The number of UASs fluctuated and they ranged in size/configuration," a spokesperson for Langley Air Force Base told The War Zone in a statement earlier today. "None of the incursions appeared to exhibit hostile intent but anything flying in our restricted airspace can pose a threat to flight safety. The FAA was made aware of the UAS incursions." "To protect operational security, we do not discuss impacts to operations," the statement added. "We don’t discuss our specific force protection measures but retain the right to protect the installation. Langley continues to monitor our air space and work with local law enforcement and other federal agencies to ensure the safety of base personnel, facilities, and assets." ... In response to queries from The War Zone, the shared public affairs office for NORAD and NORTHCOM said that the two commands were "aware" of the "issues" Gen. Guillot had referred to in his testimony, but directed us to contact the Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD) and the U.S. Air Force for more information. As already noted, there were already clear indications, especially from plane spotters using online flight-tracking software, that something unusual was going on in the skies over and around Langley and the rest of the Newport News area last December. This included a flurry of aerial activity, including what looked to be Air Force F-16 fighters conducting combat air patrols supported by aerial refueling tankers, over Newport News and other parts of southeastern Virginia around December 12, 2023. ... Online flight tracking software then showed one of NASA's WB-57F aircraft, with the U.S. civil registration number N927NA, flying circular orbits with Langley at the center the following week.

So, I live pretty darn close to Newport News. I go out on my deck at night for a cigarette, every night. I probably do this several times between 10PM and 1AM. I live on a small lake so houses that face us across the lake are probably 150 yards away. No trees in my view. There is nothing to do but look at the sky while I am out there. Being a pilot, I try to notice any activity going on, just for fun. This thread and the report mentioned above reminded me of several nights back in December. One thing I do is I try to guess an aircraft's heading while it flies overhead, guessing it's destination. Several things I noticed over several days, was a single aircraft that appeared to me to be flying a zig-zag pattern. On a general heading, but angling off to the left and then off to the right, etc. I thought that was weird. The craft had blinking lights, but the timing of the lights was off. Seemed too fast. I thought to myself, you're just seeing things, you're getting old and your eyes are deceiving you.
I saw this over several nights back then. I don't recall the dates. I thought they were possibly drones, but they seemed too high, and they would have been over Oceana NAS, which is a big problem. Something else I saw possibly back before Thanksgiving. What I saw was very high in the sky. It was one object when I first saw it, but later there were 10 or so others that grew (kinda dropped) out of it and flew in series fairly close behind the first. All were lighted, white, but not blinking. I thought this odd, but convinced myself that it was Elon Musk's satellites deploying, or something similar. That's all I got. I forgot all about this. I remember going to bed shortly afterwards a bit inquisitive and cautiously troubled. Skies were clear, unlimited. |

It will eliminate most of the clutter in VR view when you point it at a light it will highlight and give reg number if it isn't .mil, which would severely degrade the usefulness in your location, but hobby drones also don't show up. Usually they aren't at or over 1000' AGL for long though, especially in a heavily monitored airspace like that. Thanks for the input! Zig-Zag flight pattern were another thing that was mentioned as something regular aircraft don't do, especially hard corners and not 2 minute turns. |

I live next to a small airport and see this fairly often. They’re survey drones and they move all crazy like this constantly. I first saw them at night with no idea what they were. In daytime it’s obvious once you know they’re up there.
They survey the runway before and after take offs and landings. They also get better eyes on incoming aircraft. They give approach data which makes them zip around in fast weird patterns like this. Guessing it might even be automated/programmed. My dog freaks out when they’re out and he sees them. I’ll try and get video some day but it looks the exact same as this. |

View Quote We had them doing grid search style LIDAR passes from Colorado to the Mississippi a couple or few years back, I don't think they would allow that over two military bases unless they were military, in which case they've already gotten that from many earlier passes. That was a big news flap about the flying objects but it was pretty clear what they were doing in a predictable fashion and straight lines for most of the time. Other lights don't always act like it, even with a different operator. I do like to explain everything I can on things seen, since it cuts down the clutter. The 'orbs' are the hardest to classify as anything at all depending how close somebody is to one. Could just be a light. |
