21 USC 5845(b):
The term “machinegun” means any weapon which shoots, is designed to shoot, or can be readily restored to shoot, automatically more than one shot, without manual reloading, by a single function of the trigger. The term shall also include the frame or receiver of any such weapon, any part designed and intended solely and exclusively, or combination of parts designed and intended, for use in converting a weapon into a machinegun, and any combination of parts from which a machinegun can be assembled if such parts are in the possession or under the control of a person.
Just out of curiosity, what does the part in red mean? Is the word "restored" as opposed to "converted" significant? |

Just out of curiosity, what does the part in red mean? Is the word "restored" as opposed to "converted" significant? IMO, 'restored' is the key. If a firearm was never manufactured to fire more than one round per trugger pull, then it cannot be 'readily restored' to that function. IE: An AR15 was not manufactured with a sear pin hole, therefore it cannot be 'restored' to that condition. However, a PPHs parts kit that is not properly demilled and might only take a few basic hand tools to repair would be considered 'readily restorable' because it was manufactured as a machinegun, and would take no special skills to return to that state. |

I love these,"which came first, the chicken or the egg", ".45 vs. 9mm lethality" , and now the M16 bolt carrier.
I am no expert since my gun business began in around 1938 with a 20 Ga. single shot when I was about 6 years old. Dove hunting, shooting them out of trees. I have a Bushie M4 and its got the semi bolt carrier, if I had or wanted an M16 carrier I would use it but the semi one works just fine. The "effing" BATFE changes like the autumn sky, once every day and seven times at night, you never know what they can devise to screw somebody. I will stick with my factory Bushie parts. Of course when Obama's Civilian troopers come, I may as Pappy Yoakum said, "Bounce a rifle ball off their punkin' heads" !! |

While we're discussing this, I have another question. Having an unshrouded firing pin, even if not required, seems like it would help prevent hammer-follow on weapons that might have a defective disconnector. So, how come everyone seems to be moving in the direction of having the pin shrouded?
