I always assumed "SS - BSM - 2 PH" it stood for Silver Star, Bronze Star (not sure what the M stands for but he had two Bronze Stars and one of them had oak leaves on it). and 2 Purple Hearts. Am I correct?

Thanks!

FYI, he was posthumously awarded the Distinguished Service Cross after the headstone was made.

Bronze Star Medal, vs the Bronze Star device, which designates multiple awards, as do Oak Leaf Clusters

Thanks! I've always thought so but my bias should be obvious.

Thanks. He was. I spoke with his former commander a few years ago, a Major, and he told me he was the best soldier he'd ever heard of, let alone served with. He may have been exaggerating for my benefit but maybe not. I choose to believe not.

I was ten years old when he was killed. I suppose I knew him as well as a ten-year old could.

I always assumed he was; he did all sorts of SOG stuff. He recruited Montagnard, rescued a downed pilot from behind enemy lines, grabbed prisoners in the middle of the night, and did lots and lots of recon across the Cambodian border.

He was also with Operation White Star in 1959 and '60.

I'm truly sorry you lost your dad so young, however for what it's worth, I thank you for his sacrifice! He really was a legit American hero!

SOG or not, this man was up to some very serious soldiering. Be very proud, OP.
