He bought top of the line 2014 Suburban a decade ago. To replace it with a new one was going to cost $100k so he did a complete restoration. New, more powerful engine, new transmission, rear end, all new suspension, starter, alternator, fuel pump, water pump, exhaust. Frame off, blasted, powder coated, new paint, had the leather seats rebuilt and recovered, all new audio system and head unit with Apple CarPlay. New LED headlight assemblies and LED taillights.

All together, it cost him $35k.

I could see a 20yr old burban needing a total makeover, but 10?  Cool for him, new car costs are stupid.

How many miles to require all that?

I get the lights and headunit, but the rest?

2012 4Runner with almost 320K on the clock and I’ve only done slight stuff.

Initial cost plus $35K. In the end it's still a 10 year old Chevy.

Did he rebuild his old motor or rebuild a Junkyard motor?
Which engine did he choose,?
Did he add a new/different cam?
What tranny did he use?
Did he do the work himself?
Who did the LS swap?

.... No pic?
So many questions.... 😢

Wait until he decides to sell it in a year and figures out the 35k he put into it up the market value $2k.

I’m all into keeping older shit going but that sounds kinda dumb to me.

OK...new rule (but not really new)...

If you're going to post about your wife/gf, car/truck, guns/ammo, grill/smoker, meat, etc...THEN YOU DAMN WELL BETTER POST SOME PICS OF IT! Nobody wants to read your description of something without seeing some actual pics of the actual thing you're describing. We're a bunch of coloring book-level neanderthals, here. We need pics, otherwise we don't know what the fuck you're talking about.

Capisce?

I don't buy American either, but is there any motor that people buy out of junkyards more than the LS/Vortec motor?

The LS swap is a thing because of the awesomeness of that motor....

Agreed. We have a 2014 Z71 Suburban we had bought new and it’s still good to go minus couple grand in maintenance and repairs we’ve done in the last few years. It’s my wife’s errand running ride and we take it on long trips usually to Destin or Disney a few times.

A full restoration at 10yrs old?!

Domestic car owners are like battered wives that came from homes with alcoholic dads: they just don't realize that there's a better way to live. The rest of us pity them but don't want to risk getting involved.

A newer vehicle with a “new” engine, trans, suspension, paint and frame off resto” is a hard pass as you know it was destroyed and it’s gonna be nothing but problems your trying to chase down

I have a 1998 Chevy pickup I use as my “beater” to get dirt and mulch or to keep from having to drive my new truck when it’s shitty out. Only thing I’ve done to it is replace brake lines and brakes. I live in Michigan, where the roads eat vehicles…..and that 1998 still looks fantastic. 10 year old full resto?
