Looks like a de-orbit to me. Space junk that didn't make it to the usual graveyard in the Indian Ocean.

Meteorite breaking up, looks a lot like the one that hit Rusia, breaking up early and then cascading down.
No sudden direction changes or speed increase. Green at the front at times could be different metal in meteorite getting hot. They didn't say the direction, I'm guessing it was headed toward Ocean otherwise there would have been a report of it hitting us. |

I don't think there's any minor space junk that would break up that much and still be moving and on fire, most of it is aluminum sheeting or structural members. Even a smart phone dropped from space would have been vaporized in the first 15 seconds of that track. I'm guessing we'd have been told about a de-orbit coming to look for it if an entire satellite was coming down, like the Skylab hysteria. This looks like a meteorite, way smaller than the one in Russia, but similar "look" of it breaking up. Just much smaller so a lot less flash and no boom, maybe a few pebbles sprinkled on the ocean by the time it made it through entire atmosphere. Can't believe it's 11 years ago already... Looks like a meteorite breaking up as it enters the atmosphere. Looks like a sizeable one with all of the pieces that came off and had their own track.
Still, probably not much bigger than a washing machine. My guess is it completely broke apart and vaporized, though some may have fell into the ocean. |

Pretty amazing. Would be wild to see in person.
Wasn’t the beginning of the Transformers movie nearly identical to that? Or was there another movie? The new War of the Worlds was lightning strikes if I remember correctly. |

There was a thread in GD about a 5800 pound pallet of used up batteries from the ISS that entered Earth's atmosphere around the same time. A 2 pound piece fell through a roof in Florida.
I suppose the pallet could have broken up on reentry and stuff may have scattered across the country. This could have been part of that. I have no idea. |
