Several years ago while my son was being treated in a NICU I picked up a book sitting in the lounge for parents. The book was interesting but it was the second in the series so I put it down and read something else. The book came to mind so I'd like to find the series.

Unfortunately I can not remember the title or author. As I remember, the series was set shortly after WWII. The main character was a WWII vet who was transported to a fantasy world. Seems like there was maybe some kind of portal as the main character was able to transport back to this world.

Thank you in advance.

I dont think that Stirling ever turned this one into series, unlike some of his other writing, but I figured I'd throw this out there as a possibility

As good a yarn as that looks, I don't think it's the one. Gonna add it to my list anyway

Have you tried the Janissaries series? Similar, but set more modern.

Could it be a Harry Turtledove novel?  He does a ton of alternative history stories.

Something along those lines happens in the Otherland series by Tad Williams. Good read. Books are 2+ inches thick for the hardcover.

@M95Mauser

You remember anything about the cover by chance?

Nothing helpful. I want to say it had a predominantly red color scheme.

Edit: I'd guess a 1970's vibe.

Think you may have to go back to the source to see if they still have the book.

Was it H. Beam Piper's Lord Kalvan series?

Surviving several years in a NICU waiting room?  If he finds it there, he better go buy a lottery ticket too.

That ticks enough boxes that I'm gonna try it. Thank you.

Not a series however the synopsis reminds me of Slaughterhouse-Five.
